Is this a job that can be done at home or does it need to be done by someone in 'the know'?

I'm changing my bolt on steering wheel jobby for a quick release boss, and smaller steering wheel!

So I need to remove the little metal bit (don't know the word) with the thread and the splined bit on it and replace it for a quick release one that comes with the boss.............or do I need a new steering column?

If it is a case of take old one out and bung new one in, does anyone know where I can get the appropriate tool from, or as I said earlier does it need to be done by a garage or someone in 'the know'?

Cheers

Graham

I'm a little confused by your post, but if you want to fit a quick release boss, you need to buy the appropriate size unit, then get a 3 leg puller, undo the nut that holds the original boss to the coloumn and remove the old boss, replace it with the new one and its all over. Simple really. If that wasn't the gist of your question, please elaborate. P.S. 3 Leg pullers are availible from all tool shops and the majority of motor factors, buy the most expensive one they have as cheap tools really are shite.

Hi, I have been ringing around this afternoon, and everyone has said I will need to weld the quick release shaft onto my column, i'm a bit weary of this as I rekon there must be a better way of doing it, can you describe the puller to me as I think it's what i'm looking for, I've got the boss off I just need the old shaft out!

OK, The boss is off the shaft right? In that case, you SHOULD have no reason to remove the steering coloumn. What shaft are you refering to? Have you bought the quick release boss yet? There are ones that require welding on, but there are also ones which fit to the existing splined end of your coloumn. What car is it for? The westfeild? What did the coloumn come out of originally?

Yes it's for the westfield and the column came out of a MkII Escort! I haven't bought the boss yet as I thought I could just take the end of the column off and bung a new one on, I think i'll have to pay the £180 and buy a caterham column or something!

AHA, I have a cunning plan master (said as baldrick),

I think I'll buy the static boss from caterham which is a 3 bolt jobby but not quick release, this is £20 and will fit onto my column! I'm Happy now!

Question in the same general area ..... Does fitting one of the "bolt on" types of quick release kits make the steering wheel come further "out", i.e. towards you ?

I fitted a quick release steering wheel to my old westie and involved removing the old wheel and boss.Fitting the adapter(which needs to be welded on) to the column.Line up the wheel,so as to be as near to straight.Remove the wheel carefully.Mark the weld on boss to the column.Remove column.Goto welder and slip him a fiver.Refit back onto the car and all done.If you want to see what it looks like, you can see what my car looked like in the next Which Kit? Jules DJ has just sold it(my mate) but they did a for sale inspection and a two page write up.Nev,yes it does give a bit more leg room and you could even move the weld on boss nearer to you before it's welded on.
