Guys, hoping for some help here, has anyone put an old body shell onto the running gear of a 4x4.

I've got an old disco, and an old classic mini shell.

People have done it before as the pics are on Google.

Hoping someone can help with the legalities.

I already have a classic mini with a lotus elise engine and box in the front.

Want something big and brash

One word... "wheelbase"

If you chop the Discovery to fit the shell, you'll need to IVA (unless you were thinking of extending the mini?)

I've seen mini shells on Suzuki SJ chassis

It's the IVA i was worried about.

Im losing the rear section of the chassis, I'm looking to lift the chassis height to get a level floor.

Same with the front, relocation of the fan and oil cooler etc means the front can be shortened too.

Wheels are as near the corners as I can get, the the gap between chassis and shell will be enough to clear wheels.

Hope that made sense.

ANY mod to the chassis is automatically IVA.

You avoid IVA if you retain the complete unmodified chassis AND THEN keep SOME of the original axles/engine/ brakes/ transmission/ suspension to score enough points to qualify for it being a "Radically ALtered Vehicle" instead of a kit car.

If you IVA you'd better be GOOD at building cars. If you RAV it, the DVLA is only interested in the V5/ownership/legal ownership matters and not the quality of workmanship.

If you want to do a mini, you'd probs be best on a Jimny or Daihatsu 4Trak I think?

I can see all the IVA stuff on line, I don't want to have to compromise and try to scrape through the 8 point rule.

I'd planned to use my old disco as a sacricial experiment.

Get everything working and then but another, mot it for the year and then swap all my bits off the old one onto the newly mot'ed one, if that makes sense.

I can't see anything about the legalities of changing it over during its mot. Then as it's been seen knocking around how does the mot man deal with it?

There's a body shop that has donr the same. He's used a newer mini onto a hilux chassis.
He's kept it as a hilux. But has kept the chassis intact from what I can see. I guess that means RAV, but how does it work with the cut and shut clause?

Not sure what you mean.. Once you mod it you cant drive it until it is RAV'd or IVA'd and the paperwork is in your possession. If RAV then it won't change the MOT - it'll be tested as a landrover cos essentially it is a landrover in a party frock. If IVA'd then I'm not sure cos I dont do that.

All depends on how (if?) its registered...

Thanks Andy, party frock, I like that.

I didn't know you couldn't finish using the mot, I'm guessing the bloke with the hilux has done exactly what you said.
Hes left the chassis intact so to use the RAV route.

One of our guys did the SJ route the other year but didn't re-mot it so its gone by the wayside.

Guess I'm going to have to read up on the IVA rules,

IVA isn't too terrible. (Almost) got my US designed Midlana build through in December, and that was never intended for our IVA. Few stupid fails, none related to the picky stuff. My point being, get the guide and keep it close when building and you'll be fine, and don't assume that because the classic Mini was on the road once it can pass an IVA! check everything.

I'd imagine you might have some issues with the positions of the lights depending on how wide a track you are looking at, so check the guide carefully there.

Any more info on the Midlana? I've been interested in them for a while.

Got the car through the re-test on Thursday by the way, so just(!) registration to do now.
