Track Only Kit Car
Discussion
Hi All,
I have long harboured a desire to build a kit car, and I am now getting into a position where it might just be a reality.
I'm looking at:
- Car will be track only and trailered to the track.
- Budget needs to be relatively controlled. Max £20k build cost, preferably a bit less, if possible
- Id be happy with car or bike engined. I like both.
- Reliability and build quality are more important to me than out and out pace. I've read tales of chassis cracks and shearing suspension components etc on some cars. I really would prefer to steer clear of that kind of problem!
Any thoughts on what to look at regarding makes and models? I have an incredibly long list to wade through at present!
Also, given that is track only, are there any shortcuts in terms of IVA, or build requirements that I can do without?
Are there many kits out there that cater to a track-only user?
fwiw, I used to be a regular trackdayer until work, family and financial commitments removed that particular hobby!
I've previously owned a Caterham, an Elise, a TVR, an Impreza, a Mustang etc etc, you get the idea, I'm not a complete noob, but my spannering skills are limited... and hence the idea behind the kit car... a learning experience as much as anything. So I would want something "relatively" straightforward to build, rather than something that needs a GNVQ in fibreglass laying and 20 years experience on an English wheel.
what do you think Pistonheads, is the above possible?
cheers

Take a look at https://www.riotcars.co.uk/
They do a track specific chassis, with car and bike engine options.
P.S. I am not affiliated with them.

Hi Turn7, thanks for the reply...
Was wondering what you meant by the last sentence? I'm out of touch with the kit car world, but I have heard that the kit car industry has seen better days...
Rephrased - As you say you wanted build the car, I would say buy a new kit from whoever currently owns the Fury project, but as far as Im aware, the project has been mothballed. Was wondering what you meant by the last sentence? But a quick google finds this, maybe worth an email....

Supposed to be one of the simplest is: https://mevltd.co.uk/kit-cars/mev-exocet
Now available to take a MK3 MX5 as a donor as well.
Just not sure its fast/track enough really for what you want.

If it's track only get a Phoenix not a fury, that's what I did and never regretted it, you don't need the doors etc for the track, look for a second hand IRs chassis and rebuild, cheaper than a new build. I have a Caterham and a Locost, in addition to the Phoenix, the Phoenix is way the best.
I think your right on raw, mine was ane ogf chassi built for e by Jp. The suspension is right, geometry etc, and you can buidut up to your spec, mine runs against works R500 and it keeps up. I've buit a few locoststhey just don't come ear the Caterham, I'm told tgatteshort reatrars are just wrong.
You can build the phoenix as you want, mine runs a one of Irs, evo 6 brakes, Rs20det, around 450 bhp in quali trim. 17 inch wheels, one off inttercooler, radiator, manifolds, no light's, instruments or hand brake, fuel tank in passenger seat, one of big arch body. Rf anti roll ar etc.
I'm lucky skilled labour is cheap in Asia so wd fabricate to our own design,
My car started out with a lotus 910 turbo but it couldn't handle the km long straights at Sepang so we rebuilt it. Now on third body.
The basic design is right and the you can buiditasyou want for a good price.
