Hi,

Does anyone have any advice on buying / building a 550 replica please?

I’m going to start with Martin / Walker but I’m investigating different options.

Does any anyone have experience building their own and can advise how easy / difficult this would be?

How difficult is a 550 to get through the latest version of the IVA?

Thanks in advance!

Just found out MW are so busy with their 904 replica that they no longer make the 550 bodies or chassis. A build might be out of the question now unless another UK firm offers a kit?

Not a kit, but a 550 replica nonetheless, I’m not sure if this is still available but may be worth getting in touch with them: -

May be worth searching this forum too: -

I still look from time to time, narrowly missed one a couple of years ago that the trader held out on, then sold it at auction for much less than I’d offered the previous month!

This shape looks lovely, search continues.
Would prefer a running car but a bit scruffy if needed, ideally M&W and not a Banham….

Spoke to Holmes and they no longer specialise in the 550 but some great advice from them.

Could buy from Chamonix direct but there’s a lot to get one through an SVA and I’d prefer a basic spaceframe with a beetle engine on carbs versus an EFI vehicle.

Will keep an eye open for a project….

Not a 550 as such, but have you taken a look at this?: -

Also, Speedster Clinic have been talking about a 550 replica. Don’t know how far they’ve got but maybe worth contacting them: -

Thank you, the RSK is lovely but it’s really a 550 I’m chasing.

The Kenilworth maker is interesting, the more I review this the more I believe I may be better looking for a car on the road of older vintage that’s been through the correct process to register.

IVA might be a tough call and would limit the engine choices into areas that don’t really appeal.

personally I would love a Vintech 550 tribute like this one, sadly they only made one, but love it.

Re: the IVA question, probably a good call.

I have a Lotus MkVI replica chassis that I was looking to build and try to make road legal. I could probably get it through IVA at a push but getting any kind of age-related registration may prove close to impossible.

I’m going ahead with the build but will make it a track day/race car build and forget about trying to put it on the road.
