I have a standard inertia S/M in my kit car 1600 xflow (1980 MK2 Escort) which has not been used a great deal since replacing it a few years ago.
After recently experiencing the S/M getting stuck a few times I sent it to my local electrical motor repairer and have been informed that the armature is damaged. £60 to repair it.
Can anyone recommend a suitable upgrade and whether I can put a pre engaged S/M in it without too much hassle?
Thanks

Pre-engaged starters mesh from the other side of the flywheel, and the ring gear is chamfered to suit. You therefore need to fit a new ring gear (engine out, and heat the ring gear in an oven - they're shrink fit), otherwise the pinion is prone to binding.and damage.

It's many, many years since I did the same job on my Westfield SE, but as I recall there were clearance issues to the chassis tubes with the solenoid on the pre-engaged starter, too.

IIRC , bearing in mind it is a couple of decades since my Crossflow days , the pre engaged starters have a different tooth form (finer) on the ring gear from the old Bendix type.
Might be worth giving Burtons a ring before buying a new starter.
