What I would do is ring the DVLA and ask them, as despite the bad rap they get they've always been very helpful in my personal experience even through the process of getting my Tiger road legal, and also when I looked at a possible MX5 purchase but it was flagged on the HPI as having had another V5 issued.

For IVA it needs to be stamped into the chassis at the front and offside (UK). It should also have a VIN plate normally made of aluminium and riveted to somewhere like the bulkhead.
However, we don't know how old the car is so none of this may be valid. Earlier cars also had much shorter numbers 6-8 digits.
I would expect to find the stamping on the upper front cross member or the top of the offside upper chassis side rail.
It will also be quite faint because if you try and get a good bold stamp you end up distorting the tube (Ask me how I know). When I do a VIN stamping I do a separate steel strip which I then continuous weld onto the chassis. Also you can make a mistake in the stamping without wrecking the chassis.
