Having decided it’s time to get back into a proper toy, I’ve been looking at Cats by have decided I can get a much better spec Westy for less money.

I’ve got some ideas on spec, but tell me what your ideal spec would be...

Fast road and some track use, terrorising local roundabouts would be main use.

175-200 up
LSD
Cage -nice but not critical
Wide track - nice but ?
Quick rack
Good shocks and brakes

Quality build

£14k absolute tops

I sold mine around 3 years ago.

210BHP XE engine on taper TB's
RAC roll bar
1989 narrow sei and I was its second owner.
Didn't have LSD though

Put it on the site and some of the preferiti were dismissive of the age of the original kit. The buyer, from Belgium, was really happy with the car.

I mention the above because there are bargains to be had away from the generally accepted "best specification" and if I was in the market again, this is where I'd be looking. I'm not that interested in bragging rights, just the best car for the purpose intended.

There is a rather nice looking V8 for sale well within your budget on the Westfield owners club forum - only a 3.5 carb but still plenty of power, also a 2.0 Zetec turbo bang on your budget

Just makes me realise what an absolute bargain my V8 was 18 months ago

Mine has just gone up for sale, way more power than you indicated you were looking for but (just) about in your budget - doubt theres a better Westfield for sale at the moment for the money

Slightly off topic; the spec I would be after, if wanting any significant road use, would be full windscreen/wipers and sidescreens. Then you can then take it out for significant road trips, even on colder days, without having to resort to a crash helmet. Half hood is a good option , too.

Remember Billy Connolly’s quote? There’s no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothes. Kit yourself out correctly and you could drive an aero screened Westie all your round.

That said, I drove mine yesterday and as I wasn’t really in the mood, I would have welcomed a screen and heater.

There are plenty of cars on WSCC that fall within your spec and budget - £14k will buy quite a lot of car, with some good quality components

Aeroscreen or windscreen depends I think on how much you are going to use it.

For any serious distances a windscreen and sidescreen are your best bet. I've never driven with aeroscreens but just using the windscreen without the sidescreens is bloody knackering over any appreciable distance. I've got a mini heater in mine which helps. It keeps you well toasty in the cold, well the bottom half of you anyway.

A friend and I managed Sicily and back in his Westfield at the end of Sept/beginning of Oct many years ago with just sidescreens and windscreen, no heater or roof. Full biker clothing was needed though. I only got cold once. Mind you I am only 5'4" so I'm fairly well protected by the screens.

Agree. I remember being out in the surf once, in the cold - don't remember when - probably winter. It was cold enough already. Then it started hailing. As the hail stones hit my cold, wet face, they felt like knives. And, I'm thinking, what would that be like at 60 MPH??!? Hmm scratchchin

If you're gonna use the car outside of the great British summer for anything more than a local-ish run, then you'll need either a crash helmet or a windscreen.
