handbrake cable through ali panel
Discussion
Wondering if anyone has any ideas - the handbrake cable on my Fury passes through an aluminium panel on the transmission tunnel sides, and at the moment its just a hole cut in the metal which seems a bit of a bodge. The problem is that it passes through at a very shallow angle so it's prone to scraping on the both sides of the hole. I can't move it as the mounting brackets are welded to the chassis in the tunnel.
It seems like what I need is some sort of grommet that can fix to the panel but which has an angled tube with smooth ends to guide the cable, if such a thing exists. Anyone have any ideas how I can protect and guide the cable without causing too much friction on it?

Something like those? I searched for ‘parking brake cable grommet’.
ETA ‘tube grommet’ throws up some potentially useful parts too, speedometer cables from older cars, drain tube grommets too. Something must fit the bill!

You don't really want it touching the sides of the hole at all; I'd have thought if you put a grommet in, it'll just wear through it. Depends if it's touching when it moves or only when full on or full off.
Can you make the hole bigger so that there's no contact? If not then you ideally want another section of outer cable fixed to route it through the affected section.

I've made the hole larger but the cable passes through at a very shallow angle so I'd end up with a huge hole that opens right into the tunnel and is open to the ground
The grommet on this looks about right if I added a small piece of rounded-end metal tube into it to act as a guide, but I'm having trouble finding anywhere in the UK that sells just the grommet and not the whole cable.

Ah I think I finally found something at a sensible price, hopefully this will work ok.

It should be OK I think - it's more to prevent the cable vibrating against the sides of the hole, and the handbrake doesn't get used often so I hope that it won't wear the grommet out too fast. Depending on the size I might be able to add a small piece of flared brake pipe or similar to protect the rubber.Fury1630 said:
Forget the grommet, get some nylon tubing, slit it, put it over the cable as a guide & cut the hole to suit that, then p-clip the tube to the side of the tunnel ahead (outside) & behind (inside) the tunnel. Job done
Thanks, I like the idea of a piece of tube p-clipped to the tunnel, I might well use that idea. Cheers.Gassing Station | Kit Cars | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
