Afternoon all,

I was hoping someone could help me out with a snag I have with my Fisher Fury. From what I gather it has a type 9 Ford gearbox, but the push down to get it in reverse doesn't work. So when I come to get 1st it usually goes into reverse! Not good when it gets on the road!

Here's some pics of the gear lever and top down from the box, hopefully someone can point me in the right direction!

Im no expert, but IIRC, theres some sort of bushing in the lever assy that wears out causing this.

I think.

We need to see a side on view of the lever bottom. There should be a notch and it should be nicely defined.
There should also be a plastic insert that the gear lever engages.


In this pic you can see the notch I referred to.

Afternoon all,

Many thanks for your replies and apologies for not getting back sooner, was away with the family all this week.
I've purchased one of the plastic saddle clips but if I'm being honest not really sure which way it is supposed to go!

I've also taken a couple more pics as requested:








Any more pointers would be much appreciated!

Looking at that last pic it looks like the old one is still on there, albeit caked in black gunge?



You need to pull that one off revealing the little metal cross bar, then put the new one on with a little bit of grease to hold it:

Hi Jim,

Cheers for that! I've managed to get the old one off and get the new one on but the problem remains. It will still go straight into reverse without having to push the gear stick down. Am I looking at a new gear stick at this point?

It's been a while since I had a type 9 out of a car but IIRC there is a reverse-stop metal block that needs to be there to prevent you engaging reverse without pushing down on the stick. On my old Tiger I was using a Westfield remote shift which had it's own reverse stop built in, so I had to remove the type-9 piece. I think it's a metal cylinder piece that can be slid out backwards with a large screwdriver, which looking at my pic above I think is the silvery metal horizontal piece just under my red box, but as I say it's been a few years and I've not dismantled the box in my current Fury to take a look. From what I can find to remove it you need to have the rear cover plate off as it slides out that way.

Check this thread, a little way down is a post by Lewis that shows the block removed - that's the piece that should stop the gearlever moving into reverse without pressing down on it. Yours may be worn, or else the lever itself may be worn on the area that contacts it, you'd have to fit the lever back in and try to see why it's not contacting that metal stop.

EDIT : Finally found a pic from the rear of the box showing the detent end-on, i've highlighted it in a red outline:

There is also a post on that thread by owelly showing more of the internals with a locking pin between the tail housing and the main box, but I've no experience of removing the tail at all.

That's brilliant thank you again Jim!

I've had a check and it looks like the block is there, but looking at the bottom of the gear lever, it looks like the part that makes contact has worn down to the point it just goes straight underneath.

Would this be a new gear lever job or is there a way I could repair it?

I suppose you could weld on some extra material and re-shape it, although without a guide shape it may not be obvious what shape it needs to be?

Maybe worth calling Fury Sportscars or another kit car supplier like Tiger and see if they have a decent used gearstick? Or else there seem to be loads on ebay (eg search for "type 9 gear stick") , and it looks like you can get short-shift versions new also:

Evening all,

So I tried to put some washers in between the bolt holes and the mounting plate and success! I can no longer hit reverse without pushing the gear lever down! So this will do for me for the time being but long term it looks to me like a new gear lever will be needed.
