Hi

I have a tiger kit car which I have left for about a year sat up. The steering lock must have gone on when I last put it away as it is on now and won’t come off.

The column is from a Sierra/escort I believe.

I am currently charging the battery to see if that helps. Not sure if there is a solenoid that needs to release?!

But does anyone know if it’s easy to remove the steering lock? Only for the time being to get it running again.

Thanks

Try turning the key whilst wiggling the steering wheel?

I had to remove the ignition barrel on my Super Six as I lost the keys during the 5-year build, IIRC all it involved was drilling out a rivet or something underneath the column and the entire barrel could be removed. I am guessing the column on an S6 is similar to that on other Tigers, I certainly used the Haynes Sierra manual for various bits of it.

I eventually found the keys - my 1 year old had somehow posted them into an open CD drive bay on my PC, they were in there for about 4 years smile

There is no solenoids in there. Its an old ford. Is the key round shaft or a flat key ? You could try a drop of oil into the barrel to try and free it off.

As has been said, I would take the barrel out - it is just a simple mechanism.

Back in the day the local scrotes could get them out in seconds so you should be on your way soon enough biggrin

The whole lock mechanism was originally hold on with security bolts. The bolt head was designed to break off at the required torque leaving nothing left you could get a grip on to remove them. They have to be drilled out to remove the lock (not easy which was the whole idea) however someone before you may have already done it and replaced with normal bolts.

Rather than drilling out security bolts you could try removing the switch (from opposite side to the keys). With the switch removed you may be able to better spray the lock with WD40.

Good luck

Daft Q - you are sure you have the right key? Believe me I have seen it done loads of times, particularly when a car has been left for some time. Other than that, use wd40 or similar penetrant & a good wriggle whilst twitching the steering back & forth will usually free off, other than that unfortunately it's as already described
