RAW / Stuart Taylor Phoenix or Fisher Fury
Discussion
I'm just coming out of Caterham ownership and I'm looking for a less expensive summer fun car.
I'm rather taken with the cars mentioned in the title but there seem to be very few available second hand and I don't have the time to build a new kit from RAW.
Is there somewhere (other than PH) kits cars are advertised, which publication has the best classifieds section? I've seen a couple and they're around the right money but one is in Ireland and the other has an engine I'm not convinced about.
Thanks in advance.

I've got a Caterham and a phoenix, I prefer the pheonix, but my pheonix cost more the the caterham, is extensivky modified. My point is you'll get what you pay for, pheonix will be all about the builder, they aren't homogeneous. There are a few good face book groups, nice lce axil fury on face book yesterday for 5k.
Good choices! I have a Fury (you may have guessed). It's a fantastic car & although based around a sevenish chassis, they are quite different to drive. The lack of wind buffeting & not getting a wet arm if it's raining being two of the best bits. I can hold a conversation at 70 - I have to shout, but I can hear my passenger & the sat nav, with no problem.

I built a fury (200-2005) with a stock 2.0l silver top Zetec on bike carbs (eventually), great car and was a great experience due to Mark Fishers attitude as a kit car company owner.
As said the Fury is a great little car, race winning chassis but bodywork give a more civilised drive on the road. I would have one over a seven anyday (probably with the exception of an all aluminium bodied Batho). I feel the sweet spot for the fury for road use is around the 175hp mark, enough power to be able to exploit most of it on the road without endangering yourself or others.
I would add to the list the new Sylva J16/17/18 which was developed from the MGF based Vectis and to a small extent the Fury Menace. This has the classic Sylva Fury/Phoenix lines but is mid engine and therefore has more donors available these days. (There is a single donor version based on the MGF or a bitsa version which originally was based around the Zetec SE/Sigma engine (1.6 but some have used the puma 1.7) and fiesta parts.
On the Sylva Sports Cars face book page there are teasers of the new J18GT - a J15/16/17 with a hard top, coupe, GT style body. His demo car looks like it will have the 1.6 ecoboost in it.
These come up occasionally so keep your eyes out.

I've an R1-powered Fury. I bought it after an 18month look at finding the 'right' Caterham/Westfield for me- some with more power - then spotted an ad, and once I seen & tried it, I wondered why I'd looked anywhere else. I'll say I did happen across a beautifully put-together & set-up example, which is what you should hold-out for, whatever kind of kit car you choose. Buy teh best example you can, it's not much at purchase, but a lot easier long term, I'm sure.
Anyway - the Fury is an utter hoot, handling - since it can be set-up to taste - easily the equal or better than the 7s I tried; lighter (mine 427Kg/~172hp), gecko-in-a-drainpipe handling; pleasingly-retro styling only ever attracts positive attention; and 8yrs in - I'm done with buying 'fast cars', still learning from driving it & keeping it: an object lesson in ..the little thing that can be just-right, at any speed. It makes even following a tractor at 20mph simply great fun.
ETA: shopping today - I'd certainly like to try the Sylva J models - Jeremy Phillips' last hurrah, and he has delivered some terrific chassis over his career. there is good reason the Striker/Phoenix/Fury are feted.
