. I have been hankering after a early 911 for a while but missed the boat since values went through the roof, I really like the Magnus Walker custom specials. Even 80's Impact bumpers are now £35k for a ok car but probably rotten underneath, £45 -£50k for a nice one.

I came across a covin fibreglass 911 shell on eBay the other day, which got me thinking about building a replica using a custom built space frame chassis using a boxster as a donner; engine, gearbox, suspension, dash, loom, seats etc. Mid engined so better handling, flat six so the right sound and similar power. Quick google found a few people offering fibreglass panels in the uk including roof. I couldn't find anyone offer a whole shell but it's not difficult............

I figured;
Donner boxster £2500
Fibreglass body £3000
Space frame chassis with roll cage and floor £4000
Glass £1000
Misc parts £2500
Paint £2500

Is anyone handy on cad to design me a chassis.............

Nice idea, however cost of a bespoke shell is way off. That may be the price if you could shift 100 units once the moulds were made. Are you intending to mould the shell off a real car, making it from a cad model is even more expensive.

As for a chassis, the spire get may be able to squeeze in a Boxster engine but seating position may be a bit out for a 911, try overlaying a Boxster and 911 side view over each other in photo editing software to see how they fit.

Think you would be best buying a Covin or covin body and retro-modding it!! Looking at this, the boxster engine would be a tricky fit...

Pie valley Buggies make a beetle chassis replacement designed for Beetle based kits that takes MGTF components, including a KV6 option. That might work?

you are probably right, the shell price is on the low side.

www.clubautosport.co.uk offer the following individual panels;
911 / 964 / 993 Full Roof Skin × 1 £300.00
911 2.7 RS / SC / 3.2 Rear Quarter Panel (each) × 2 £390.00
911 2.7 RS Ducktail × 1 £375.00
911 2.8 Front Wing × 2 £620.00
911 2.8 RS Front Bumper × 1 £275.00
G-model Bonnet × 1 £195.00
G-model Rear Bumper with Rubbers × 1 £140.00
Subtotal £2,295.00
Shipping Shipping to be calculated once order received
GB Tax £459.00
Total £2,754.00
In addition you would need the windscreen surround & scuttle plus a set of doors (Found a pair with glass and door trim for £800 on ebay)

It would be interesting to see the boxster over layed on the 911, unfortunately i dont have the tech to do that.

Could you mount the engine behind the rear wheels as per a 911 but invert the diff / gear box or mount the gearbox upside down to give you 5 forward ans 1 reverse gears? i remember someone who rebuilt a diff incorrectly and ended up with 5 reverse gears and 1 forward gear!

There is a world of difference in size and proportions between a Classic 911 and a modern one!!

Could you ‘flip’ the transmission the way you do with a Beetle? Would probably cause havoc with oil drains and electronics on a modern unit I think...

There is this though. ...

If you're after a project then this could be a good start:
