With the recent announcement by the govt that petol and diesel cars are to be phased out in 2040 then I was wondering what will become of the cars kicking about today.

Do you think there would be e-ngine conversion kits available where you would take out the petrol/diesely bits and replace with a sub frame containing electric motor(s) batteries, electronics, etc? A bit like a kit car, but in reverse?

Just a thought! smile

I saw a very interesting item on display on the Hewland stand at the Autosports show. A combined electric engine and transaxle for a single seater.

It was TINY!

Apparently you can just specify what wattage you wanted.

Also I know people like Motec are starting to get projects involving electric motors.

Once this all start becoming common place on race circuits, the kit car market will quickly be able to pick up on it.

Part of me is actually looking forward to it. I have as much interest in electronics as mechanics.

But part of me will miss the sound!

The proposed new rules will only affect new cars; so existing ones will just carry on until they break or rust. I can't see there being much call for replacing the engines in what are, mostly, white goods.
