Can't get R1 Neutral

Hoping someone may be able to shed some light onto an issue with my R1ot and not being able to select neutral. I've just fitted a replacement 5VY R1 engine and can select gears OK but can't get back into neutral. This is the case with the engine running hot or cold and also when engine not running. wondered if anyone had come across this issue before and give me some pointers on resolving it.

Clutch springs are up-rated, all plates look OK and I didn't spot anything odd when changing the springs over originally- although I'm no expert on these engines so could easily miss something obvious!

Clutch and gear-change are cable operated - next job is to go and remove the gear-change cable and see if I can select neutral by hand, will report back once I've tried that - in the meantime, any ideas to kick me in the right direction would be appreciated - was hoping to have it MOT'd today to get rid of its SORN but no chance without neutral being an option!

Is the selector arm on the gearbox nice and tight on its spline? mine came loose once, and made gear/neutral selection imprecise. Just needed nipping-up with a 10mm spanner, and no issues since (6yrs +)

You've not put the selector on the spline the wrong way round have you? Did this on a bike a long time ago and despite trying for ten minutes before the penny dropped... there is no neutral between 5th and 6th
