Good morning Pistonheads
I need to make one of the above for my Microplas Mistral restoration.
Pics here:
https://flickr.com/photos/22719913@N04/sets/721576...

It needs to be around 300mm high and curve around and on top of the sides of the car, reducing in height at rear. What I need to know is:
What is the best thickness, and material.
What is the best way of cutting and finishing each material with a jigsaw?
Can it be cold bent or is heat and a mould/former required?
Could it be a 2D shape bent around (i.e. Not a compound or bubble curve)
How is it best fixed to car.

Appreciate any help from someone who has made these

These are used on the Fisher Fury spider, looks like they are just a flat sheet bent round. May be worth a call to Steve at Fishers to see what he does with his, what material he uses or where he gets them made. If you get measurements you may be able to adapt one of his.

As for cutting I would have thought a carbide jigsaw blade would be best rather than a toothed one. These are blades that have abrasive material rather than teeth on them so are better fro cutting this type of material, bit like emery paper on a blade.

For info these are usually called Aeroscreens so a google search on this may help.

I asked about this a while back to make a new aeroscreen for my Fury. The answer was 4mm Lexan. I got a piece large enough to make 2 , in the end it worked very well, cuts nicely with a jigsaw (I used a laminate cutting blade) and bent around nicely into shape.

Thanks for all you comments. I finally finished my screen. I got a 400x1800mm sheet of polycarbonate from a sign maker in High Wycombe (who also let me go through their scrap bin so I have enough for two more and some headlight covers)
I cut it with a jigsaw, cut really easy unlike the acrylic from Homebase which shatered. Finished the edge by hand with a sanding block.

I can't upload a photo from my fone, but have a look at my Flikr album, it's near the end.

Daglocks, screen looks good, how did it stand up to use? I am looking at making 2 for my Lotus 7.

Went well until the bonnet flipped up and smashed it!
I’ve made another in 4mm as the first 3mm one wasn’t rigid enough and blew back in the wind.
It’s harder to bend round, so you will need to use individual fixing brackets like in the photo

Assuming the piece of plastic I found in the shed last week was the leftover Lexan from my Fury it heat-bends very easily - run a hot-air gun over it gently and persuade it to bend. I made a safety guard for a lathe from a piece and it made nice 90-degree angles, so a gentle curve should be simple.

There may be plenty spare plastic sheeting by next year (hopefully) on the market?
