I've always been interested in the idea of my first car being a kit car, but I'd like to know the general opinion on here of both a kit car as a first car and if so which one? So far the only really viable ones seem to be Quantums because they're pretty common so i could find one I liked, (in comparison to others), they're more practical than most and not too expensive. So my current question is if you were me would you want the H4 or the 2+2 and why. All other suggestions would be appreciated, thanks.

Had a quick look, look great, especially the coupe models but being that they're all seemingly pre 1980's I'd be worried about maintenance. Plus doubt I could afford an engine conversion, and without it even with classic insurance it would come at some cost. I just wish gtm libra's were still in production, then I might have been able to find a cheap one. Thanks though!

My first car was a lomax. You will need to make sure you can get insurance. At the time I bought mine (8 years ago), I couldn't get insurance until I was 21.

A lot of kit and classic insurers stipulate that it is to be a second car, and not your only vehicle.

Some insurers will now cover younger drivers.

I'd suggest looking at some of the older GTMs too. Don't worry about older mechanicals. They are so much easier to work on than more modern drivetrains.

One of the reasons I was particularly interested in the Quantums instead of other kit cars was because on their owners club advertise Adrian Flux insurance on their website, then I later saw an article about going through the owners club for insurance at 17. The article was on about new driver premiums of £500 for a 2+2 coupe with a low mileage cap, keeping in mind I don't expect to find anything this cheap but it's a starting point and thought there must be at least some truth in it.

Quantums are a great product, and many were used as daily drivers, our own included. If you find a well-built and well-cared for one, it'll be hard to go wrong. Not much between the 2 models you mention, so it's down to finding a good one, and your preference of the styling.
