Hi all,

Whist it is not technically a kit car i figured you guys would have the greatest understand of the registration rules and i am looking for a little advice.

We are looking at this car on ebay:
http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/172572816168?_mwBanner=1

Now it looks really nice and seems to be well done, but i can not figure out how it should be registered as a Vw when it clearly uses a 912 shell.

Looking at https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-registration/radically-... would seem to suggest it should be registered as a porsche as the 912 monocoque is the main component? What is gained by registering it as a Vw?

I dont know if i am missing something?

Thanks in advance.

Well it's just failed its MOT so not a good sign.
You're right; it's a Porsche with VW parts so any purchaser could find themselves in deep doo-dah with the DVLA etc

Mind you it might be worth buying just to find out where they get their dodgy MOTs done! biggrin

Looking at the photos, I suspect there might be a VW beetle chassis under the body which has had the floors cut out.

An odd hybrid, but if correct, and the beetle chassis is unmodified, then strictly speaking it is a rebody, and the V5 could be updated.

A lot of early kits were VW beetle based but none had an 1800cc engine
This one was registered in 1970 as a Volkswagen so rather throws up the question is it a ringer, what is the floor pan from
Tax exempt though

My first thought was it was a Beetle chassis/floor with 911 body aswell but the advert states 1976 "era" shell which looks to be a proper full monocoque rather than split floor/body like a Beetle.

It looks really nice but we are just worried it is a potential can of worms…

Taking it at face value and accepting that it is a genuine 911 shell, the crux of the matter is how this was "professionally adapted" to accept the VW components. If the mods didn't affect the "chassis" then this should (according to current rules) have been registered as a Porsche, rather than a VW, I would suggest.

It would probably be easier to deal with if it was based on a Beetle floorpan TBH, although it looks a bit expensive for one of those, however well it's finished!

That transmission tunnel is not 911 / 912 shape. It looks very much like a beetle shaped tunnel to me, and pedals. My guess is the bottom of the shell has been cut out and the body dropped on the beetle floorpan. A bit like a very expensive Covin, but in steel.

If that is the case and the wheebase is unaltered, i.e. Spine of chassis has not been cut, it could well be fine, although I would want the v5 updating to reflect the body swap. At that point, however, it may called in by DVLA for inspection which could open a can of worms.
