I saw this fun beast on holiday, and it has always been my thinking that one day I would like to build something like this.

It is (fairly obviously) a capri, built onto what I am pretty sure is (less obviously) an Isuzu trooper chassis. It is registered as a capri.

As far as the authorities are concerned... Is it a running gear swap, a body modification? Does it need anything more than a normal mot and an engine change size on the v5?

If the Isuzu chassis is un-modified then it is a rebody and will stay as Isuzu on the V5.

If its chassis is modified then it probably will need to be IVA'd,

Range Rover chassied Land Rovers should have an IVA.

exactly!! the v5 might be re-named isuzu-capri, but thats all.

if the car is running on the capri-logbook, its definately illegaly registered and a ringer.

I don't have the no plate in any of the photos, but it was definitely registered as a Capri, I didn't clock what the engine capacity was when I looked either.

I was being dragged into a craft shop at the time...

Those tyres sticking out are also a no-no under construction and use regs (and simple common sense also)

slightly OT - sorry - but can someone tell me what tyre size they are. a reasonable guess will do obviously!! wink

They are a tractor tyre 11.5/80r16

Despite appearances, they didn't stick proud from the car.

The body on the capri is also it's chassis, if that's completely Unmodified (which it looks like) and running the capris engine and box then you have the option to retain the Capris identity as you have bolted on the extra chassis and suspension.

But it's had major modification!

If the 'extra' chassis and suspension has been bolted on to the Capri monocoque then the capris ' chassis' might be completely Unmodified AND therefore retains its 5 points for it, if the engine and gearbox has also been used then it has enough points to retain its identity and not require an IVA.

it might seem madness, buts it's possible it's more legit in DVLA eyes than a Capri with an enlarged tunnel to fit a stranger be (that specifically looses the cars identity and thus requires an IVA).

It's all theory as we don't know if the 'Capri' has had its chassis modified.

Sorry I didn't make my statement very clear. What I meant was the vehicle is modified (as a whole, not chassis) so centre of mass, braking requirements etc will not be as original (may not be a problem... but could be). I suspect if there was an issue it would be questionable. Those tyres really do look a problem, but maybe it's an optical illusion!

Had an ADDITION TO the chassis/structure, not a MODIFICATION OF the chassis/structure. wink

The vehicle has had major (questionable) modification. If you take chassis#1 and bolt it onto chassis#2 with suspension and drivetrain that are matched to the dynamics/weight of chassis #2 does that make it ok? Taken to an extreme, if you put the bodywork of a fiesta onto the chassis of a reliant robin would that require IVA, or be ok because you've not altered the chassis of either the Reliant Robin, or the bodyshell of the fiesta?

You're confusing the dictionary version of modification with the legal definition of modification.

obviously we dont know what has been done exactly... but.

lets assume it s a landrover using LR chassis and oilybits, and the body (monocoque) of the capri welded on top (probably (hopefully) with some bracing/stuff to hold it up a bit better). yes, "that makes s OK" as far as registering the car goes. It has the original umnodified chassis and running gear, with another body that just happens to be a monocoque chassis. It'll be registered as: MAKE: "Landrover" and MODEL "Capri Monster" or some usch thing. The Capri could be a fibreglass silhouette on a space frame instead - doesnt matter. The LR would be the donor for the purpose of paperwork and score full points. The Ford is just "beautification".

FLipping it round, you cudl take the unmodded Capri, unbolt front wings, remove glass etc, then bolt the LR body over the top. youhavent altered the Capri chassis or running gear - the LR is just "beautification".

Would it work/work well? neither probably would. but that's a different problem.

A lot of SPECULATION here andygt is the most accurate in regards to DVLA /VOSA /IVA
Read the regulations!
Even at IVA after preparing maticulasly it's down to the tester.
On balance I think it's a Capri however if it was registered as an Isuzu I would be ok with that.
