Have had my 1600x/flow, worked into a 1700. the crank and flywheel lightened and balanced, a 244 cam installed and all bolted together. It runs with a ported/ gasflowed head Inlet and outlet, and a webber 28/32 twin choke carb, and also has vacuumless electronic dizzy.
It runs well, has a lot of pick up on acceleration, but refuses to idle properley, it runs for maybe 5-6 secs on idle the tries to die, if you blip throttle it keeps it running.

Any thoughts as to what my problem is ? Some say the flywheel is to light to keep it running, some say i need to rejet the carb.

Also, was thinking of putting twin Zenith Strombergs on, ( manufacturing the manifold is no problem), would these run the tuned engine ok. They came of an 1850 dolomite?

Have you tried screwing the idle screw in a bit to increase the idle RPM? Also, what advance are you using for idle?

The engine is already idling at 1150 rpm. the advance on the dizzy is set at 16 degrees of the timing mark.

Have you checked for dirt in the jets?

The carbs worked fine before the engine work was done, i assumed they would still be ok. thats the next thing to check, thank you

did the carb work with the 244 cam before? That sort of spec cam would be much better off on twin 40 dcoe's.Not saying it won't run,but the 244 is a bit of a lumpy cam.Is 16 degrees the normal timing figure as I used to set it about 14 btdc.It does sound like a carb problem.Did you remove the carb from the manifold or the manifold from the head? Could you have an airleak through the gaskets or not blocked off a vacuum feed for the carb,so when it goes into tickover it can't draw enough fuel/air in because of it?
Don't bother with the strombergs, more aggro than they're worth. How are you going to change the needles and bits to fit a modded engine.Just stick to webers.

Carb worked fine with original cam, the new one and the engine work have all been done together. Might see if i can get a 38 DGAS or 38 DGES. Might work better. Dont want side drafts really as it means a hole in the side of my shiny locost bonnet, already one in the top. But i had the strombergs laying around so wondered if they would work. All gaskets are new and tight, might have found a leak in vacuum port on inlet manifold. perhaps that the problem, just waiting for the Defcon a to go off.
