Hi folks. As someone who's never spent much time around kit cars, I could use some informed opinions on something I've been pondering for a few weeks now...

Basically, undertaking big, adventurous roadtrips is a bit of a hobby of mine. Previous journeys have included UK to South Africa in a Porsche 944, and from here to Singapore in an old Corvette, while the next trip - which goes by the name of Pub2Pub - is set to hit the road in just over a year; thread here:

www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&t=15...

Now, while I've always liked the idea of setting off on one of my road trips in a vehicle which I've built myself, I don't really know how feasible this is. So... with Pub2Pub looking like it's going to involve 25,000 miles of mostly-tarmac driving, with some rougher gravel sections, what are peoples opinions on how well something like a cheaper Cobra replica, Hawk Stratos or similar would cope with such a trip?

A viable, though adventurous, option? Or something I should simply discard now, for the sake of my own sanity?!

Thanks in advance...

A lot of kit cars I have come across over the years have sump clearance issues, and although I have done 25000 miles in my Seven over the last five years, I try to avoid pot holes and speed humps. I am sure there are kits that could do well, but most would suffer on the off road sections.

Maybe something based on an off roader chassis would be suitable, or a beach buggy style car.

There is no reason why the right choice of kitcar will not do the job fine. Ground clearance and luggage space would seem to be important factors in your choice.

Whatever you choose, leave time to clock up a few thousand miles of driving to prove reliability. There is no reason why a well sorted, well built kit won't do what you want. The difficulty is getting from registraion to a well sorted kit in a short space of time!
