Having just seen that the basic chassis/body pack is only £3000 including VAT, me and a mate are highly tempted to build one of these over the summer. Anyone got any experience with the car, and know what a likely build cost would be? I've emailed Martin at MK with the same question but it would be nice to get another perspective on it.

The current plan is to go with an Audi 1.8 turbo unit, since they appear to be going for relative peanuts at the moment. Lovely looking car, and an absolute bargain from what I've read

Am I also right in thinking that there's enough room in the back for a rather large V8?

Why waste your money on buying this rag when totalkitcar has reviewed it for free.

and doesn't this also fall into the
"locking threads and advertising etc" thread?

I've read the article on totalkitcar.com and went and bought the mag after work. You can tell the demo car has been built to emphasise the low cost aspect of the car. It's only got 100bhp FFS! I think with double that it should go rather nicely

The entire drivetrain was lifted from a G-reg Audi 80. Cost £50 apparently. I'm worried that getting a suitable 'box for the 1.8T engine is going to be a problem. The engine is mounted longditudinally in the GTR, and transversely in most (all?) of the cars using VAG 1.8T engines. I'm also thinking of a Volvo T5 engine, depending on how much they're going for.

Aha, so it needs to be a longditudinally mounted engine & Ex FWD car gearbox. Never thought the Audi 80 was longditudinal, ho hum you learn something new every day

Not many of those longditudinal lumps about....

Saab 900's engines would quadruple the weight of the car
Renault 21 Turbo's
OK so Audi 80's does that mean the Audi 5 pots fit too!!! yummy engine noises but I think it'd be heavy again

Audi 5 pots do fit. Apparently, according to the article on totalkitcar.com, theres enough room for a Chevy/Ford/Rover V8 as well. Again, theres the weight issue. VAG 1.8T seems to be the best compromise between weight/power/availability/price. I'm sure there's gearboxes and bellhousings available for them. The Westie XTR4 uses the 1.8T engine, and that has it mounted longditudinally. Don't know what 'box it uses though.

westie is mid engined so uses a transaxle of some kind eg Renault, Porsche, etc. (most probably a bespoke item)

The GTR is mid-engined as well. I doubt it's a bespoke 'box, that would cost a stupid amount of money for a small(ish) company like Westfield. Never thought of the Renault transaxle, thankyou!

Wonder if the VAG 1.8T fits straight onto the Audi 80 gearbox? After all Ford can't be the only company whose new engines fit the old gearbox bellhousings.

Pretty sure the Westie uses the Audi Trans with a newer 1.8T motor, probably bolts straight on.

I'm pretty sure that the 1.8T in the Audi A4/A6 is longtitudinally mounted with a transaxle in the case of the front wheel drive cars (i.e. not Quattro).
