NEW KIT CARS FOR 2005
Discussion
Personally I would like to see something that is to the fury/pheonix/stylus as the Toniq-R is to the 7. Basically, a full bodied, front engined, rear wheel drive roadster with a modern look. Max weight shound be 600-700kg and it could go as low as 400kg for a stripped out racer. A full screened version with doors and even a tin top should be availible.
Of course thats just me though

Same here, but mid-engined. Bike engine of course.

You mean like the Menace that The Kit Car Workshop recently released?
Rick
Exactly!
Planning to get one of these, but although the body shape follows the success of the Fury, would like a modernized one, same chassis and engine but a newer body.
Never mind, I'll still get it, and won't worry too much about the body.
Not even going to paint it! Matte Black gel coat and that's it!

Will of Toniq-R here.
I agree there is definately a market for a mid engined Stylus/Phoenix type replacement looking car. There is of course the Elise and K1 Attack that are available. The attack is greqat looking but neither of these cars really give you the 600kg weight you want.
I am sure that someone will come along and enter this market with a great looking car, it's just a question of when and how.

Marlin 5exi-R
550kg with 220 - 240bhp Honda engine.
Not that I'm bias

Yes the Sexi-R is a great looking car (in the Lamborghini orange colour) but it sits too high, a Fury/Phoenix has a much lower waistline. The car that we are trying to find here is slick and low and taught, the Sexi-R, the Elise partly and the Aeon all have a higher section around where the engine goes. For visual purposes this needs to be cut, which is hard to do, especially on a car with a roof.
The Mk2 MR2 has a large window area and so the waistline runs lower (just under the window) making the car seem lower and more aggressive. The Aeon oppositely has small doors with an ugly shut line which cuts the side panel in half, so the waistline is higher, making it look chubbier and more cumbersome.
A mid engined car which looks suitable would be the GT40 as the lines flow elegantly around the centrally mounted engine (yes its easier cos the car is bigger overall, but so is the GT40 engine).

A new mid engined car would be nice. Styling wise I'd like to see an update of the late fifties or early sixties race cars such as the Porsche Spyder or Maserati 430 (front engined). A slightly more muscular look might be nice too. I suppose that a Jaguar XJ13 with a dash of TVR Griffith and no bigger than a Boxster is about as close a discription as I can get in words.
Chassis wise I'd like either a good spaceframe, which are fairly rare, or a good ladder frame, which can be stiffer and lighter than many spaceframes if designed with care. (If this issue interests you try kitcaranalysisV2.doc on the locost7.info site)
I'd like to see an end to over optimistic claims that any old thing can be made to work as a donor. This does not inspire confidence but a lot of companies still do this.
An inteligent means of door adjustment would be nice too. The old shims under hinges technique is a real pain. I'd suggest having fixed hinges supporting a door frame with the adjustable mounts being between the door frame and the door body. You could sit in the seat and simply wind a nut to move the door. When the door fits you fit the inner skin to the door. Job done. No more huddled under the dash trying to jam another shim in with skinned fingers while the door swings into the garage wall only to find that the shim has made the adjustment worse. Whenever you ask what was hard about a build the builder nearly always says "the doors". Perhaps the Ginetta G26/G27 idea of using a complete mass produced car door would work.
I wish good luck to anyone who brings out a new kit in 2005.

I have some thoughts of building an on-off design based on the Abarth 2000 design from the 60’s, using an Audi V6 with gearbox as drive train. I am planning to skip the windscreen and just use a wind deflector. This will of course be a mid engine design. I am aiming at a weight of 860 kg including a 70 kg driver, fuel, some tools etc., this to get the weight above the legal limit of 15 kW/100kg in Sweden. With a 2,8 V6 of 174 hp it should be quit nice I think. Would someone be interested in a similar kit?
