Hi,
I have just noticed on the kit insurance post that Footman James are closing down and not accepting any new quotes, but will honour existing ones? Does anyone know why they are closing? They must be one of the bigest classic car insureance companies.
Thanks William

As I said on other thread, I've just taken out insurance for my Quantum with them as of start of this month, which hardly makes it look like they're closing down.

Footman James are a Broker rather than an Insurance Company. IF they are closing then all current policies will be valid. And If they are closing your Insurance Co will no doubt contact you at renewal time

They told me this year (or maybe last year, I forget which) that they were pulling out of the "modern classic" insurance arena and would not be offering a renewal quote on our 1990 Elan SE Turbo.

From the sound of it they're getting out of the insurance game altogether.

Most Brokers, Footman James, Backford Bloor etc all offer policies insured through Chauser. Although the level of cover seems to vary along with the price depending on which broker you use. In my case Footman were 40% cheaper than Backford, (With the same company) But, the total loss value was not agreed. Seemed pointless saving £200 a year, if I risked loosing £10-£15k (50 - 75 years @ £200 a year)if something happened. Backford also SEEM to be the only broker who will go to £30k Agreed value.

I renewed my policy with FJ just 3 weeks ago....No mention they were closing down the :-(

I guess, we will all need to look for another insurer by this time next year.

It was I who started this "rumour" so I might be completely wrong of course.

It might be they are stopping certain types of cars or it might be they are stopping insurance for new members? It would easiest if someone rang and asked...

this doesnt bother me a great deal as they always had a stupid rule on engine sizes.

my ginetta has a 2 liter engine and they wouldnt insure it beacuse it said 2000cc on the v5 if it had said 1999 it would have been ok.
ive had this problem twice with them now!! but apart from that they seemed ok.

if theyre really closing down try graham sykes instead, they seem ok, theyre a bit cheaper and dont have stupid engine size rules!!!

I would suggest determining the exact cc of your engine and applying for a correction to your V5. Very few 2L are 2000cc, they're more likely to be something like 1998cc for this very reason.

thats what i ment by stupid rules. the manual for the ford cortina which the ginneta is based on says 1997cc! but i just got insured with somebody else. graham sykes insureance will insure it as 2000cc (without costing loads!).

FJ were the only ones who would insure the Phantom and I didn't have any hassles over the cc (2700)?

we do some work for them so I will ask the situation when they ring us.

If you look on the back of your V5, you'll see that you can make corrections and then send it back to get reissued.

As you've already found out, that 3cc can and does make a difference for insurance. It also makes a difference for claiming back business mileage, if that is something you might do.

Besides, it is in everyone's interest to have correct information on the V5, so there's really no reason not to correct it other than apathy.

Edit: It you look on the relevant page on the DVLA website you'll see that there is no charge for getting a V5 reissued if you are simply correcting it.

This is the reason my Tiger's engine size is 1998cc. I know it's a 2lt but not sure of the exact cc after it's rebuild. The donor car was a 1600 so I just filled in the form on the back of the V5 to change the engine to the one I used in the Tiger You could specify any cc you like!
