A'Up

Recently I've noticed that the lights on my car are pretty poor so have upgraded the halogen bulbs to "Power Xeon 60% Brighter" and fitted the system with relays and are now fine for town driving and the like.

Living out in the sticks a little bit, it's not impossible for me to get to roads with no street lights and as such good main-beam lighting is essential (something mine falls down on slightly) so am looking to get a set of spots on the front.

I really don't want to get a set of normal 4 - 5" round spots on there as I don't have anywhere I could put them neatly (I already have a set in the garage and they are simply too big) so am after some small but powerful lights which I can use, any ideas?

I had thought square lights by the number plates would be good, but what would the throw be like since they are so low? The reason I mention Toniq, is they have small pod-like lights which could sit happily under the main lights without taking up too much space?

Cheers

I know of a Tiger owner who's fitted these:

to his Cat E1. Work well apparently and look much nicer in the metal than that photo. They're also very small so can be mounted quite discretely.

they are pretty much what I was looking for Thanks

Any idea on the strength of the beam? I'm not really wanting these for cosmetics hence the desire for them to be small - but there is little point adding them if they are overpowered by my main beams completely and only shine...

(Plus I'd be getting rid of "Sexy Blue" lens )

Yeah but those are fog lights, for driving when its foggy What you want are 'driving lights' or auxillary headlights. Can probably find some in a similar style though.

I don't think you'd get away with mounting them at number plate level, there is a minimum height for them (can't remember what off hand)... Fog lights can be mounted lower though.

[EDIT] Meant to say that foglights have a different beam pattern, so you shouldn't really just use them.[/EDIT]

ah, good point, hadn't thought about height!

To be honest, the plan is to get something small enough that they can slide underneath the mounting bar directly under the main lights, those MX5 ones are pretty much what I'm after I think, albeit spots not fogs

So what's the difference between fog lights and driving lights? I would have thought that these were ok to use as extra lighting if you wired them into the main beam. I think fog lights are only such if they are wired into a separate switch.

isn't it the power as well? I always thought Fog Lights were low wattage, low slung lights that essentially weren't much brighter than Dips but shown on the floor rather then into the air. Driving lights are a match if not better for Main Beams and as such are much more powerful.

I guess it's just to do with what bulb you have in the system and the lens at the end.

Stef,

Are the ones near the bottom of this page any good to you ('Quartzline' oval driving lamps. ):

www.vehicle-wiring-products.co.uk/VWPweb2000/lights-1/lights-1.html

They're 55W so plenty bright enought and are described as driving lights

Those are pretty much the fellas! And if they aren't, there are some just slighty higher that are!

I don't know suppliers you see hence asking. Next time you can buy yourself a drink from me Cheers!

All I need is to add 100W 80 bulbs into those and I'm set

VWP are a great company who attend all the major kit-car shows. I've ordered quite a few things from them mail order, so no worries there

Regarding heights for driving lamps, Quantum coupes have driving lamps at number plate height, wired to come on with main beam.

That was one thing I didn't think was legal at all - my understanding was all driving lamps have to on seperate circuits to the main beams for some reason?

Still looking around, just "found" I need new brake pads first Have no idea what they are either although I'm assuming Marina considering that was the donor.
