Always faniced a kit-car, and a pending garage setup means it could be possible.

I have a tendancy to steer towards the Le-mans style of car (Ultima, SR3, Saker (as of new)) as I love not only the styling, but the fact you can take them out in any weather.

Now, I'd rather stay within the £12-13k mark, are there any other manufacturers I should be considering ?

Take note, I may start to take the car to trackdays now as I've always fancied this but am a complete novice !

Ta for all help !

I'd say look towards the GTM Libra as that sits pretty much in your price bracket from what I understand.

You'll be very hard-pushed to make a decent Ultima - remember the kit may be £3k, the engine another £3k but then you need all the trimmings, switches, seats... which can add up. Most companies guesstimate on around £10-12k for a £3k kit built to decent standard.

Then again, are we talking buying second hand?

Ignore my post then

I'd still say Ultima's are still too expensive (> £24k) here Although PH is running a story about a new car rumoured to be GT styled for ~ £16k.

I've just had a quick trawl through 'madabout and like the look of the Minotaur (sp) and the Dynamic Attack (vtec engine)

Anyone know what these are like ? (both slightly different)

I'm not sure but from what I've read the Attack is still in a pre-production form. I dont think any kits have been delivered.

The Minotaur is a prototype that has not evolved yet into a production kit. I've never seen a road test in a kit mag, or comments elsewhere. Very strange.

I guess all this info can change if the Attack starts delivering it's kit.Very nice shape and great engine to work with.

I've seen a prototype mould of the Minotaur in Italy, in the hands of a formula 3 type car manufacture. They build a car called Formula Goria, and it's powered by a Yamaha bike engine.

He told the press that this was a new design he was working on...............................??!!! I wonder if he bought the rights to the kit, or it's just press b......t.

The Minatuar (sp) is a bit of a grey area. Not sure if it's still around or not. I know the latest owner had big plans for it but then it went quiet.

The Attack has been available in the States for a while now and some kits have been completed and are on the road but you'll be looking at a premium to get one (if an owner was willing to sell) Certainly out of the 12k bracket.

The Darrian/Davrian or whatever it was called is a well respected car and come up for sale now and again so might be the way to go.

Cheers, John

Think you'll be struggling to find a decent Le Mans style car on the market for that sort of money, except possibly an old Beetle based car like the Montage (McLaren M6 replica).

Regarding the Attack, I'm still waiting to get the chance to review it for PistonHeads and when I last contacted them a few weeks ago they were still working on the right hand drive production version.

Never seen a Minotaur other than the original prototype debuted at Donnington a few years back, so doubt you'll find one of those for sale.

Some of the new bike/4-pot car engined 'Le Mans prototype' style track day cars such as the Dominator and the new GTR from MK could be build within your budget, but they're too new to find used examples. And they're all open top.

Think most Darrians were built for competition use, so while you might find one for sale it could be too raw for the road.

Graham,

Any others that could possibly fit the bill that spring to mind ? I have no idea wher to start looking for the old Le-Mans style racers. I've honestly never heard of some of these manufacturers !

All help greatly appreciated

Best bet for finding older kit cars are ads in the kit car magazines plus totalkitcar.com, Madabout-Kitcars.com and e-bay.

Another source is the major kit car shows next year as you'll always find cars for sale at those.

still undecided if i want a kit-car, or an old racer ?

either way, they'd be used on odd weekends, and to make my first step into Motorsport.

any other opinions people ?

This looks like an interesting car: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=4507462917&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT
Not gonna set the world on fire, but I bet it goes round corners well.
An alternative car a bit closer to 12k - I bet you could get a 2nd hand Lancia Stratos replica for that sort of money. They are great cars, and they look interesting and different, though they are hardly LeMans style.

Imp based Davrian was later developed into the Darrian as shown earlier (which often used mid-mounted Sierra Cosworth engine).
