I'm just looking around for an alternative to the 'donor dash' when I finally get round to building my kit - something fairly cost effective and ultra modern.

Any ideas?

Cost effective = Astra GSI dash,
Ultra modern = NOT the Astra GSI dash..

As far as ultra modern is concerned, the S2000 dash would be rather good, or rip the dash pack out of a written off MPV (don't know if that's possible, but it's worth a thought)...

Maybe think about going for some HUD type stuff, a la new M5, Corvette etc...

www.dakotadigital.com

Not what you'd call cost-effective, but very modern-looking and they do have some UK stockists.

when you say "dash" do you mean the whole surround of just the instruments?

For instance

from www.s-v-c.co.uk would be pretty easy to install in the dash, as for speedo/rev counter I'd be inclided to keep to the old style personally albeit in magnolia:
and then make your own dash to house it all

I was actually thinking of a minimalist approach like the Digidash

One extreme might be to design your own using an LCD panel and a stripped down PC. Only problem is that you would probably have to design your own software and maybe even some electronic components (not difficult though with basic electronics knowledge) As a bonus, you could use it to double up as an MP3/CD player and maybe even as satnav.

Would be easier to do with a microcontroller, LCD panel driver, with appropriate sensor inputs etc, may need CAN interface if its a modern engine ECU etc.

Shouldn't be that difficult.

The S2000 dash I would have thought, would be CAN so you would have to develop a specialist interface.

Admittedly it would be great to have a 7" screen in the dash to do a host of functions - dash, audio, engine diagnostics, rear view camera etc ......... but I haven't got a clue where to start!

I can set up a computer for the audio side, install a rear view camera setup, but that's about it. How do integrate all these functions together using one screen?
