The Murtaya's a good looking car in my opinion, shame they never sold more.... was it due to the steep price tag?

Only 99% due to the price.

I've seen build threads for these, but never an actual review of what they're like to drive

£30K for a custom 4x4 car - how does that compare to other factory built kit cars ?

Its a shame but I can't see how it'll ever take off. expensive to build, difficult to sell, hard to IVA(look at all the emissions stuff in the thread). Its just not as good to look at either(in a classic beauty sense).

Was this its second or third life?

basically adrenaline produced it without the niggles sorted out ie doors windows and a lot of owners got stung by having paid fot their car then having to at least partly pay to get fully built
emissions was due to engines not being designed to meet iva criteria
still have mine and drive it at least twice a week dependent on work and waiting for arden to sort doors/windows out and make my targa top....
because brz has come out it would be very hard to justify murtaya production continueing to be honest which is a shame

Is this beacause people were trying to register them as new cars with donor parts and engines?

I believe it was largely because people were trying to pass IVA with high spec modified engines that didn't meet emissions criteria. The way around this is to pass with a standard engine and then modify.

Other than this, I don't believe there are any major IVA issues ... no more than usual, anyway.

What a shame.

This has to be one of the best attempts at producing a modern kit car (neither a Seven nor sixties styling) yet.

The styling may not be the prettiest but it is very purposeful and modern looking. There is probably not much that can be done to make it "pretty" as the bonnet is the shape it is to clear the engine.

Expensive? Yes, but, I would imagine, also shatteringly quick with rally proven mechanicals, lots of tuning potential and full bodywork.

Expensive?

Is it? And if so why?

The donor can be bought very cheaply.
My impression was that it is pretty much a rebody?

So why does it have to be expensive? How much is/was the full kit?

speak to anyone who's bought one! Kits are expensive, still lots of mods/time needed(its not an ultima body). Lack of resale value etc etc etc

I really like the Murtaya styling and concept, and I have an Impreza wagon as our family car. But I think the main problem was / is that the owners wanted the car to be something it was not designed to be, ie a producton quality car. I think it would have worked if it was designed with a "beach buggy" mindset, meaning no frills just a £10k chassis / tub / body which over a couple of months of weekends you could stip and build a £1,500 rusty Impreza into. Simple doors, accepting the Subaru dashboard complete and minimalist trim and lighweight. I think too lots of people had the cars built by the factory at garage rates so you soon end up with a bill which would buy you a tidy Ferrari 355 or even a 964rs. Most people could do a decent job of a 7, but I dont think average Joe could make a decent job of a Murtaya. And by the time you have had it trimmed and soundproofed and 1100+kgs again it would probobly drive exactly like the Impreza the donor parts came off of but with perspex windows fitted and the interior stripped out. The world is a better place for the Murtaya but it cannot work I fear in its current guise.

i bought it as a kit car knowing it would not meet oem quality but a lot of owners have found the subaru underpinnings not to be as reliable as they thought with engines/gearboxes needing replaced in a lot of the murts on the road as a lot of the donor parts came from old donors which had already been well used lol
the tmic on murts is not sufficient for any high power output as scoop is too small especially when you compare it to a new age impreza scoop so fmic is the way to go so this adds money but future proofs regarding power
the otr price soon became nearly £30,000 with proper seats/fmic and 6 speed gearbox nevermind painting/uprated brakes etc and unfortunately much as i love my murt there are better cars you can buy for that sort of money
in retrospect if adrenaline had pushed the £20,000 murt and then introduced extras after they might have kept going with more investment as a long term prospect

20k?? Yeah, right, i doubt if you could give the moulds jigs away & the buyer have a profit out of it.I could never understand why anyone wouldwant totake a perfectly good 4 wheel drive sports car & it has to be good cos you need all the important stuff for the new car & go thru all the ag of taking it to bits to build it intosomething no better looking & only a little lighter & less practical, then spend loads of money trimming & spraying tha car & having allthe troubl of iva registration & stuff to produve .................what????????
You might jsut as well ripall the seats & heavy stuff out of the donorswap the glass for perspex except the screen & have somthing still practicalbut just as quick as the Murtayas ever gonna be save the cost of the kit the iva/reg & a ton of work & expense. This has to be thr most pointless kit ever made - only my opinion irked

it made sense when you could pick up a complete donor for £2000 and for original weight quoted under 1000kg-mine weighs 1100kg with 5 speed gearbox....
it was a great idea especially with rally intentions-steve simpson still using his and arden using their demo for hillclimbs but just never took off unfortunately

Interesting. Quality kit with lots of heritage. Price is reasonable as it includes a £15-20k car and £25k of parts if you can shift them. Still have to sell a bundle of cars to recoup the outlay though, tough in today's economic and legal environment. Hope someone takes this up as it is too good to loose.
