I've heard that there is an ECU kit you can buy that you put together yourself. Anyone know about these things or what they're called? I'm looking for an ignition only (want to keep the twins ) mappable system to replace the vacumn dizzy system I'm currently using (and giving crap mpg).

You are probably refering to the Megasquirt system. In its basic form it does fuel only, although you can re-flash the processor and turn it into a megasquirt and spark.
It's a DIY project, for those who want to learn about fuel injection and related stuff.
I put one on my small block chevy, works a treat. Now in process of converting to sparks as well - so you get cool stuff like water injection, launch control etc.

You could probably just use it for sparks only, but it would be a waste of a great piece of kit.

see:
www.msefi.com
and my install at:

Megasquirt! Alas that's only for injection. I've got twin 45s so want an ignition only system. Browsing around I've found MegaJolt:

http://picasso.org/mjlj/

which looks to be what I've after Anyone actually fitted one to a Pinto (or any other carbed engine)?

Megasquirt & Spark (Keeping existing dizzy for spark distribution only) or Megasquirt-n-edis (distributor less) will do the same - just ignore all the fuel stuff. It will require RPM and Vacuum hookup.

After megajolt came out people added the spark functionality to the std megasquirt, i think you may find more/better support going down the megasquirt route because more people have used it (I COULD BE WRONG!), plus you get a free ECU to play with. You dont even need a car, you can get the stimulator which emulates the entire car on a board the size of a fag packet!

Look on the westfield sports car forum under boardroom.Search for a guy called Bill Shirvington.Lives in Hants and brings over from the states all the gear for megasquirt etc and makes his own kits including using injection systems from bikes to work on cars.

You're the second person to mention this chap. I think I'll drop him a mail about it all

I'm currently going down the ignition-only Megasquirt route by using MegaSpark on my non-vacuum advanced SB Chevy. The big attraction for me is that this requires only 4-wires and a vacuum line to be wired to the box. It'll only work because I've got a separate MSD 6AL ignition box that generates the actual sparks. I'm saving the full upgrade to fuel injection for when I have the time and the $$$ and the weather is rubbish(!).

Bill Shurvinton is the man to speak to (there's no "g" in Shurvinton ) for supply of kits.

This month's Retro Cars mag is worth a look if you haven't already seen it - features a guy fitting a Megajolt ignition system to his modified Triumph Spitfire.

Someone on the Tiger list mentioned an article in Retro mag. Must go and check it out.

Also, does anyone have Bill's email address? I've tried mailing him through a Yahoo list but it hides the actual address so not sure if he'll get it. cheers

A bit of an aside, but do these kits use a crank sensor or is there something retained on the dizzy ??

Depends really on what you want.

Megasquirt, Megasquirt'n'Spart and MegaSpark use a dizzy or other pulse per ignition event trigger (like a 4 magnet crank trigger - on a V8).

Megasquirt'n'EDIS or Megajolt use Ford EDIS modules (from early 90s UK+US fords) which use a 36-1 tooth wheel which can either be a Ford part or one you source yourself. EDIS is great because it gives you a rock solid wasted spark ignition system but only for Inline 4, Inline or V6 and V8 engines.

Basically Megasquirt is adaptable to pretty much any engine. Which route you choose has as much to do with what bits you've got and how much effort you want to spend to get it working. Which ever route you go there will always be excellent support form the people who designed the various versions and the many thousands who have now got Megasquirt powered cars!

The first stop for info on the details is the MegaManual and for any issues or questions you may have the Megasquirt Forums.
