In my quest for 'the perfect kit' I am going to visit the Donnington Show in a couple of weeks. I will be taking my cheque book (if I can pry it out of my wife's clutches) to hopefully snap up a special offer or two while I am there.

My shortlist includes the GTM Libra / Spyder and the Shelsley T2, both of which use the Rover engines but I must admit to leaning toward the T2 as it can use the more powerful T-Series 2.0 turbo complete with PGI gearbox and Limited Slip Diff. This is easily capable of 250 bhp which should make an interesting power to weight ratio

It has now dawned on me that I will need to source one of these engines and as I will not need the whole car as a donor (both kits use other cars for ancillaries) So what is the best way to get hold of one? Do I get a high mileage one and rebuild it or try for a low mileage one and stuff it straight in?

Any help will be appreciated.

I'm pretty sure the specialist Rover breakers tend to focus on late models.
The main Rover breakers that I've come across are:
www.roverbreakers.com
Viking Rover Spares
Reyland

You could always speak to Bertram who is fitting an Audi TT engine in his Libra and will easily get the sort of power that you want, the Shelsley takes this engine too...

Also worth looking in Autotrader and Exchange and Mart in the motor salvage/breakers sections as you'll find lots of companies in there.

Razman,

I see no reason why the Rover 2.0 turbo engine will not fit a Libra ?? It might not have been done before, but that just adds to the challenge of building it, isn't it ??

The audi 1.8 Turbo engine will do 250 Hp out of the box. At least, that's what my engine will do when I get it from Audi. New Audi engines will be hard to get in the UK, Audi UK doesn't sell separate engines to kit car builders / company's AFAIK. Westfield buy their engines in The Netherlands. Not a real problem getting an engine from The Netherlands though, probaly as easy as getting a kit from the UK

Thanks for the response guys

Nice link Rich - I will email roverbreakers and see what they can do.

Although I would love the challenge of fitting it, I think the Audi TT engine will push me over budget so the T Series is a more likely choice.

GTM offer engines as an optional extra (£2600 inc VAT for a 2.5V6 with box/shafts/ECU etc). It seems logical to get the whole lot from them, as the kit includes the other donor components needed.

I got my 2002 VVC engine with 1400 miles for £1350+VAT, it was missing the ECU but that was sourced new for £150. Definitely worth shopping around!

That WAS a good deal Rich - hope I can find something similar when the time comes
