Hi,I'm thinking of fitting a power steering rack to my Haldane, I've already got the rack and pump etc but I'm wondering just how much pressure is used, the reason i'm asking is that the system will have to be altered to fit the car ( machining already done ) so the new fittings i'll need will have to take the pressure produced by the pump so does anyone have opinions about whether special fittings will be needed or will ordinary hose clips be enough?

The system is very high pressure so your best bet is to take the existing hoses (as patterns for the end fittings) to a local hydraulics specialist and have him make up the new pipes. The fittings are crimped on.
An alternative is aeroquip type fittings and hose but they are bl**dy expensive. Look pretty though.

On one particular system where I did some development work, we got typical working pressures between 700 and 1000 PSI. I don't know if these were typical of all systems though! For what it's worth, I used copper-nickel pipe of the appropriate size (I think clutch "Bundy" and connected it to the rack with ordinary brass compression fittings. They worked fine for the tests although I wouldn't like to trust them in a long-term installation.

thanks, that's certainly worth a bit of investigation.
