Dax Production Up

Taking on more staff to meet demand

DJ Sportscars International, manufacturer of the DAX range of specialist sports cars, has expanded its workforce in order to meet increasing demand..

"Demand has been. running at the high level of more than 150 units a year for some time now," said DJ managing director Brian Johns. "At the same time we have been adding new models to our range - the Tojeiro De Dion last year, following on from the successful launch of the motorcycle-engined Rush variants - in addition to our continuing programme of engineering improvement."

The Essex-based family business has been keeping waiting lists under control, but demand for factory-made specialist parts like exhausts, trim, body and suspension components was in danger of exceeding production capacity. At the same time, work on other projects - including two new factory demonstrators - had slowed to a crawl.

"Our problem, as always, has been to bring in the right sort of people,"  Brian continued. "Unfortunately for some, but fortunately for us, we have seen a contraction in the aircraft maintenance industry in Essex which has brought some good people on to the market. I have been able to employ three experienced welders and a fibreglass expert, all with aircraft experience. These people bring with them excellent work practices from their previous employment and are already improving parts supply, although these things don't happen overnight."

At the same time, Brian has been able to free up his experienced assembly specialists to complete the new demonstrators. The long-awaited DAX Tojeiro De Dion with its fully-catalysed 502 cubic inch, 502 bhp Chevrolet engine is now up and running and awaiting trim and paint. A new long-wheelbase DAX Rush demonstrator nearing completion will feature the popular Vauxhall 16-valve engine for the first time in a factory-built Rush.

Both these cars could make it to the DJ stand at the Kit and Performance Car Show at Donington Park, Derbyshire, on 4 and 5 September. If not, you should be able to see them at the Harlow factory on 25 September for the second-ever DAX Autumn Open Day.

I have a Dax De Dion and its great. Superb handling, bags of power, corners superbly. A big improvement on the standard chassis.
