Zetec and Webbers
Discussion
Hi,
I took the Dawoe out of the seven for the fourth time last night (in half an hour including getting out and putting the tools away, such is my practice). Will have one last attempt to modify the clutch arm before trying the zetec.
Yesterday I bought a Ford Zetec 1600, which will need a pair of carbs. (t's a 1600 as it has the appropriate clutch, starter housing and a lighter flywheel and dates from 1992 so comes in before the catalytic converter. Also I gather it doesn't pay to put too much power through a type 9 gearbox.
I notice Westfield sell a kit including manifold but when I rang them up they weren't sure whether the 1600 manifold is compatible with that on the 2000/1800.
Has anybody got any experience on this?
Thanks
Carl

It doesn't pay to put too much power through any gearbox! Judging by what they've been fitted to in the past, Type 9s seem capable of handling around 250bhp OK.
If its in good condition it will be well reliable upto 200 horses or so. I've heard a few people warn about type-9's 'not being upto it', but it isn't true at all.
180bhp on my type 9 and no problems. The way to find if the manifold fits,is to go to a ford dealer and get the gasket for a 1.6,1.8 and 2 ltr.If they're the same part number then it will fit the head. The only thing to worry about is that the cc difference might affect the manifold coming out the side in relation to the chassis rails. Also the 2ltr primaries may be too large a diameter to get the speed up through the system to work properly.
Twin 40 webers are ideal for the conversion, don't go any bigger.

I'm almost certain this rumour comes about from either people bolting them up to V8's where the torque kills them, or using a box of a ropey old 1.6 Sierra with 250k miles on it already...
