During a conversation about cars with a mate of mine, we're lloking at building a kit car as a project for the two of us, but we don't really know that much about them. We soon put aside ideas of "stick an Integra engine in a Caterham" due to complicated electronics, and Cobra replicas due to cost.

So what are our options? I've done a quick Google and found the Dax Rush kit for £8k which seems a bit steep as I don't think it includes the engine or gearbox. What kind of price are we looking at for a Caterfield type car with an old(ish) non-injected engine?

How long is a piece of string.

Go to top of this page, hit links/classified & westfield or caterham or kitcars all makes.

My rule of thumb is that an almost new, secondhand, kit will be about the same or slightly less than it will cost you to build the same spec.
Sad as it may be, this is because most people want to build the car not just own it.

Happy hunting.

£400 to £40,000 is the honest answer. You both need to ask some questions first

1-How much can we each afford?

2-What is it going to be used for?

3-Are we going to build or buy used?

If your looking for a Sunday blaster with trackdays high up the agender then you can build a decent se7en type car from about £6k. (I'm not going to get into a debate about a 'Hood can be done for this amount or another can be built for that amount) Budget £6k and you'll be there or there abouts.
This won't get you a Caterham R500 mind. Look at Stuart Taylor, Tiger, Quantum etc ...

Buy a few mags, there are several on the market and then visit a few of the manufacturers. Take a few rides/drives. Pick what is right for you both and you'll have heaps of fun.

If your looking to go used then try the classified in here. Also look in any of the magazines for loads of different types. Just take care! Like buying any used car, there are good 'uns & bad 'uns.

Best of luck

Paul.

Go and have a long browse through www.totalkitcar.com , it s a bit slow but if you go through the tried and tested archives you'll see reviews of lots of different kits which usually give you an estimate of cost to build.
