Gearbox/Engine Combos
Discussion
I have been trying to get a Dawoe (nee Vauxhall, please don't why but it was in the car when I got it....) engine mated with a ford type 9 for a trackday in two weeks - this is in a seven. (The engine fits but the clutch is refusing to work). I have decided that it will probably be quicker to use a ford engine with it. (And keep everything as standard as possible).
I was wondering which engine to get, looking for a minimum aggro fit as the trackday is only a couple of weeks away.
The ford twincam/sierra combo might be easiest as it should fit (assumming I go back to the original bell housing). But how tall is it likely to be?
A crossflow would easily fit, but do they mount well with type 9s?
People are raving about Zetechs but I guess they would take a lot of work - would they need new bellhousings etc.
Thanks
Carl

It's the 1.4, apparently it's only got about 4000 miles on it (the manufacturing bar code stickers are still in place).
Wondering if longer clutch release bearing would do it, alternatively I may need more mods to the arm. (A new pivot for the arm has already been made up and it has an adapter bell housing which I guess would be for a Vauxhall - the engine is visually very similar to the 8 valve vauxhall, which we would expect).

OK, so it's the 1.4, still not a bad unit, I'd reccomend ringing sbd on 0208 3910121 ( www.sbdev.co.uk ) as they know more about vauxhall engined westfields than most.
Remember that tha Caterham Classis VX had the 8v engine for years onto a type 9 box.

I would have thought the pinto would have been a better option for the type-9, as i believe (someone correct me if I'm wrong) that the twin cam engines use's MTX75 gearbox, in the sierra/granada?
(someone correct me if I'm wrong)
All the 4 pot iron block ford engines have the same mountings for the bellhousing. MTX75 is a front wheel drive box - x for transaXle apparently. The MT-75 is the factory choice for new westfields, but the type-9 can be used AFAIK.
A crossflow and a CVH will also bolt right up to a type 9.
From the simplicity point of view, it's hard to beat the Pinto, and gives enough power in a 7 to make it feel interesting. It is very heavy though. The 8v DOHC engine isn't really worth the hassle IMO, dosen't give a great deal more power than the Pinto, and it's a taller engine. BTW, you will probably need to shorten the sump on a Pinto to avoid embarrasing incidents with anything larger than a gravel chipping in the road.
A crossflow is a fair bit lighter, but also a fair bit less powerfull in standard tune.
The type 9 will bolt right up to the Zetec as well, but as you suspect there are quite a few jobs to do to make it work in a 7, mainly involving the cooling system.
Don't forget you'll also need to source the manifolds and source or fabricate any engine mountings for your chosen lump, plus any rolling road time if you are going for non-standard carburation (which is quite likely, and almost a certainty for the Zetec).

Thanks for your comments. I (with help) managed to get the Dawoe engine working with the type 9 (and the custom bell housing).
I will get this running in the car but I have also bourght a zetec 1600, twin dellortos and an inlet manifold to connect them together.
I don't think the cooling pipes should be such a problem but I have a little time to work out the Dawoe and Zetec as I cancelled the trackday.
