Has anyone got any experience of building one of MKs indy 7 style cars?

Firstly, how big are they compared to a standard westfield? I had problems getting in my westy which is why I eventually sold it so could use a tad more leg room in terms of length and width.

Secondly, what do build costs run to? I'm looking at building a BEC but using a kawasaki zzr-1100 engine. The inside will be bare unfinished ally with one decent race seat and a cheap passenger seat. There'll be no screen or weather gear, just an aeroscreen and a decent roll-bar. Any ideas on what I would need to budget to build this? I'd buy an old sierra and rip out the bits I need myself and rebuild any bits requiring rebuilding myself and sell on the pinto engine (unless it's knackered).

Thanks,

Mark

PS. Equivalent information on stuart taylor cars is also welcome.

Without starting the old magazine war again, WKC did a build feature on an MK Indy (Can't remember if it was early this year or last year to be honest.... time flies!)

It was a good read, and had a complete breakdown of costs. I'm sure Adam can fill in the blanks....

Last year, I think.
They did a budget car build for about the £5k mark.

It was done by John Watson who seems to be a dab hand with the spanners, which means he didn't need to buy any special labour, but it still looked a tidy car.

If size is an issue, have you thought about the Luego.

I personally don't like the 7 style, mainly due to the size factor. Sat in the Luegoat Donnington last year. It's much bigger (roomier) than most.

I had a quick look at their website but sadly cost is an issue as well as size.

Thanks,

The comprehensive kit is 3K plus vat then add £550 for the XL variant. Its what I looking to do next

I found that earlier and it sparked my interest in doing just that once again. I have both editions of Ron's book and I think I'll do just that. I need to learn to weld first though admitedly.

Did you build the chassis from the book or build one of the slightly larger variants or one of the IRS versions?

Mark

Deffo, got the ok from her indoors (frankly I think she just wants me to get on with somthing so I stop talking about it... niave eh?) so some advice on welders is needed. Currently looking up info on megasquirt home made engine management systems and home built throttle bodies. Should keep me busy for the winter and I should end up with something I can get in

To be honest I just couldn't find anything else I fancied and if I bought a ready made car I'd use it a couple of times and then run out of stuff to do except weld on new wings etc which doesn't interest me that much. This appeals to the airfix kit building 12 year old in me

With respect to the beer night... I'll drop you a line when I get back from hols in a couple of weeks by which time I'll have read ron's book from cover to cover on the beach and bored Siobhan and the kids sh*tless

Mark

PS... the only slight problem is garage size. My garage is 14ft by 7.5ft. I can completely clear it by building a shed at the side of the house and getting all my kit in that. It'll be pretty tight but possible I reckon. I should certainly be able to get a rolling chassis going in there at the very least and then probably build up the rest outside. I'm sure it'll be fine

Build it yourself it really is quite easy. If you do that you can play the dimensions to suit youself.

If you are going to use a bike engine a cortina might be a better donor. As you will need the front uprights brakes etc and the cortina rear axle is a simlar width to the sierra but allows the simpler live axle rear. mine uses an escort axle to kkep it small. The live axle handling has never been a problem at track days.

You are welcome to have a look at my car if you want to see a home built one.

Thanks for that.

Having spent all last night researching on t'internet I think I may go for a car engine after all. I quite like the idea of a bike engine but feel I would probably enjoy the torque of a car engine more given that I already have a bike engine in my bike.

A cortina donor is a great idea as, presumably, the rear track is slightly wider than the escort. I had and escort axled westfield for a year and I loved the handling of that but felt that there wasn't really enough room for me as my left knee fouled my left hand on the wheel. I guess I don't need it that much bigger as I will have full control over where the pedals and steering wheel are but a bit more room wouldn't go amiss.

I was thinking of putting a zetec engine in with a type 9 or t5 box and the cortina or capri axle would be bob on I think. How many components do I need from a donor to retain its registration? Any advice would be readily received.

Thanks,

Mark
