Jeremy Clarkson tested the Ford GT last night.

He was pretty impressed with it. While yapping he seemed to take a bit of a pot shot at the kit car derivative of the GT40. Nothing too nasty, but the impreesion I got was 'wouldn't touch one, not fast enough and not a real car'.

Anyone see it?

Did you get the same impression?

I reckon it would be nice to see him test a kit version and really see what he thinks. Any manufacturers care to offer him the drive?

Has anyone built a GT40 with a modern engine?

He can't fit into an original - not much chance of him fitting in a faithful replica either I'd have thought...

I'm puzzled by the difference in figures given by Top Gear and Autocar.

TG: 212 max speed, Autocar 205.

Autocar figure their cars, and it was the same one.

I have to say I think it's churlish to say it's go Mondeo switchgear on the cover.

Simon.

Not much chance of an unbiased view either....the man's status-obsessed, no real interest in cars and a total wker.

Any sniff of it being not a 'real' car and he bottles it........

You'd have loved the attitiude of Noel Edmunds towards kit GT40's on Radio Le Mans a few years back - utter elitist tw@!

Couldn't believe the price of the thing £111,000 (I think). Just think what kind of decent GT40 kit you could build for a third of that? Clarkson is nothing but an elitist and a snob. He cares nothing about cars just what people think about him. This is the man who swapped a Ferrari 355 for an automatic merc, who thinks that the automatic Merc/Mclaren SLR (an AMG with a body kit, silly doors,a few extra BHP and a 350% price increase over the standard AMG convertible is better than the original Mclaren F1.

Top gear is utter sh**e, just look at the lap times on their board, where has the Westfield Xtr2 and Radical gone ? - these were the 2 fastest cars to lap the track but they have magically disapeared. I also heard that a Catherham R400 has lapped even quicker but they decided never to show it. I Still watch it every week though - sad or what ?

Clarkson did show that he could never fit in a GT40 as he's too tall. No matter how much money he'd never be able to own one.

Either way, he's not a "build-it-and-take-pride-in-it" type of bloke, he's after a car which he can buy now, sell in a couple of years for little loss and have a whale of a time in-between.

Personally I thought that he didn't like the Kit-Car or replica's either, but then TG doesn't appeal just to us (look at the RV8 feature "we don't usually talk about engines"...."and now the Rover SD1 in a race"). Sad, but it's not a techie program and JC is the perfect embodyment of this.

He's after a car that he thinks will impress people....

I'm not impressed with a car that goes that fast if it's so bldy in efficient that it can't better 12mpg. Smacks of 'desperation engineering'....bring on R500.
And the audience stand there like gormless sheep...bleating. Bet they've all got '2fast2furious' on DVD at home and think NOS is real tuning......

Amusingly on that topic Ferg, I went to "Revolution Motorsport" as they are a specalist dealer who prep rally cars and what not.

Or so I was told.

I asked if they sold any alu-wrap for fuel pipes and the like (I'm having a little vapour lock problem at the moment) and he looked bemused. I asked if they had any electric fuel pumps and he looked shocked. I didn't ask if they sold performance parts - they had walls of Wheels, dash board mounts...

Motorsport specalists my lump of fat which follows me around!

I also noticed the magical vanishing xtr2 and radical. I would like to see the time a nice sub-£10,000 b-e lo-cost could set, that might make our Jezza a bit uncomfortable. Top gear is by the mechanically clueless, for the mechanically clueless. Car builders should not watch it, warning, it'll make you shout at the telly.

Indeed it is.

But it is still compulsive viewing...... where else can you watch grown men play darts with cars?!

Far from it Ferg - I've spoken to a number of people involved in various aspects of the motor trade who don't have a very high opinion of him either.

Don't watch the program unless there's something I want to see on it so didn't see the ford and the only interest I have when JC reviews a car is to see if he can het in it as he is similar in build to myself ie 6'4" tall and carrying a spare roung his waist

That reminds me . . . . Must get some tickets for the show and renew my subs for Max Power.

We need some interesting subjects and/or some scandal.

Have you moved factories yet Vince?
Will Fibs tell the truth about the company he accused of asking for good reviews of their cars in last months WK?

Does anyone think a kit with a modern engine (GD are importing one aren't they?) will be able to match the new GT?

Hardly an interesting subject, and hardly a scandal.... but I am just about ready to start stripping my donor (rotten garage door replaced, rewired the lighting in there.... which I have been meaning to do for three years! Workbench built etc etc)

And she announces that she has seen a house that she likes, and wants us to move.

Great. Bloody great!

I had to move my body panels, windscreen, seats and few other bits out of the spare bedroom to make room for my mum to stay next week.

That's 2 visitors staying with us at the moment. no wonder I don't get chance to build the car!
