350 CHEVY FLYWHEELS
Discussion
Hi All,
Does anyone have info on 350 Chevy flywheels for an early steel block engine?
I’m sure there has to be a weight on the flywheel somewhere, (not sure what for!) as I have a crank & flywheel here, on checking the two together they seem fine!
So, if anyone can enlighten/advise me on what the weight is for, that would be great, as the Chevy is the only V8 engine I know of that needs this!
Also, if anyone knows the torque settings for the Chevy engine (heads, big ends & main), that would of a great help too, if not, I may just have to resort to asking my American friend!
Many Thanks
Vince

Hi Vince.
As said flywheel weights normally refer to balance weights, but I dont know any more than that, As for chevy torque specs, have a look here www.streetandstripmotorsports.com/charts_guides/charts_chvytrq.htm

The weight you refer to only applies to the 400 engines as they are externally balanced. The harmonic damper also has an offset weight on it too.
The 350 engines were internal balance so have a plain neutral balance flywheel and damper.
The reason the 400 is external balance is that it has a larger throw and there is not enough room in the crankcase for the increased size of the counterbalance so they put it outside.

Thanks Steve! just did not want to build it all up and then findout it needed the weight, as for the torque settings will try my yank mate.
(has to be beter than the last guy that build it! as one side big ends where only finger tight !!! and this was sold to one of my customers as a rebuild engine !from a company in the midlands!)

I didn't offer torque figures because they vary greatly if you have quality bolts or studs like ARP. There is also a huge difference dependant on the type of lubricant used on the threads and the faces of the washers.
If the engine is stripped I would recommend using ARP throughout and the torque figures that come with each set of bolts.

Vince... make sure its not a 350 engine with a 400 crank as this may still require external balancing.
This combination is known as a 383 (what I had) but wasn't a std combination so you will only be able to tell by measuring the stroke.
A 350crank has a 3.5inch stroke and the 400crank has a 3.75inch stroke.
but be warned some after market 400cranks are internally balanced.
