If I wanted to build a modern looking, coupe or roadster with waterproof roof, modern engine, suitable for every day driving, what would be people choices ?

It should be safe-ish compared to a normal tin top, available with a diesel preferrably (don't laugh - have you driven the Audi V6 TDi ?), plenty of space for two people and luggage, waterproof, stylish and with a wow factor.

The only one I can think of so far is the Phantom Vortex with the Audi engine if it will fit. GTM might be another possibility.

Is the Vortex a possible every day car ?

The Phantom looks like a perfectly feasible daily driver, as does the Libra. Not sure if Phantom would support you fitting a different engine though...
I know GTM are helping out one guy putting a VAG 1.8T engine in one so I'm sure the VAG TDi could be made to fit and go very well...

I don't think Phantom are really bothered what engine you fit and are supporting a few different options at present. The main hassle is the loom and associated controls, the electrician currently working with Phantom has experience of loads of custom applications and I'm sure he could design anything you needed (at a price!).

GTM - 15k, Phantom - 45k+!

Not such a hard decision methinks?

Not really fair comparing the showrrom price of a fully kitted brand new Phantom with a basic GTM kit price is it!

Mine cost me around £22K

Nick - apologies, the 45k+ figure was given to me by Chris when I met him at Gaydon. Didn't realise the self-build was that much cheaper

I must say, I was a bit taken aback by the 'factory' figure as you're into Noble/Ultima territory and to my mind, the Phantom is struggling in that sort of company.

22k is the 'right' sort of figure for what is, a goegeous car

Full kit is still quoted at £12K ish leaving engine/box, donor bits and main costs of Spray/trim and wheels/tyres. Oh and Aircon. They are going to change the website back again as presently it looks as if the kit is discontinued.

They do need a few lessons on PR and marketing and I am not suprised you got the wrong impression

Cheers

Vince, what's the www for it ?

Have had second thoughts about the Audi engine, apparantly it'll need all the Audi ECU's, including the ABS stuff as well as the dash etc, might be able to use a much earlier engine, have to see. Don't want a 4cyl really.

The www is not as yet up and running its "work in progress" www not my thing and had so many people let me down in the past that it never came to be! but have a good man on it now!!

you can put almost any engine in the nemesis the older 20 valve motor from a GT (the 5 cyl is good for 220 BHP with the tubo and gives 30-37 mpg in the GT so would do better in the Nemesis as i get 26-27 mpg out of the Jag V12 at 80-90 on M ways and only went down to 14 mpg around donington !!

If you want to see the car and have a test drive just comtact PF at which kit car, he can also give you my E-mail address and i can send you more info, if you need?

will be at Donington 4th and 5th september.

There is always the Aeon.

Modern engines, roof and doors, stylish, cheaper than the Phantom (bit more than the GTM though) with the practicality of that extra seat.

A lot of the Golf owners who have done engine swaps using the new 1.8T engines have just used an Emerald ECU. Although if it could be used with a diesel is another question although...
