Took all the paperwork to them yesterday and was asked to fill in another form confirming origin of parts etc

They then retained all the paperwork and I was told they might want th inspect it but they can't tell me how long it will take!

Anybody around with any experience of this?

Depends greatly on the particular tax office you used

My Local ones, Birmingham for example couple of weeks, whereas Worcester will only take a couple of days.

Hence all the B'ham dealers with plate transfer etc goto worcester!

If its a all new build/new plate then they do not need to inspect it.

Chris

it's a new chassis/ body with at least 2 donor parts so I'm going for an age related plate, Swansea said they inspect about 1 in 10

Frustrating really, having passed SVA, I want to get it on the road!

They should need to inspect it at the DVLA local inspection site, my office arranged the appointment when I took all the paperwork in to the DVLA local office (Bham), inspection took about two minutes as they only need to verify the engine/chassis numbers and agree that all is as described.

Then took the DVLA office two weeks to give me the tax and confirmation of number but mine was delayed due to transfer of a private plate, they were worried that if I removed the plate the DVLA Swansea would then give me a new plate instead of an age related plate.

I suggest going in to the office and giving them hassle, if I had not done this I don't know how much longer it would have taken.(this was all a couple of weeks back)

As has been said before you want to hassle them a bit as they tried to put me down this route of inspection, after they asked a few different people in the branch all saying it had to be inspected, they finally found a manager who agreed with me and I got the tax disc and everything done there and then.

If you can find out the name of the examiner, his/her mobile number (they do give these out) then ring and have a chat, I got mine moved forward from 2-3 weeks to the next day after calling and chatting.

Can't beat that, but I know of a Westy owner who's been waiting 5 weeks so far and they (Bristol) still can't give him a date

It seems Bristol have gone majorly downhill since I registered my Tiger 2 years ago. In fact I got it inspected by them before my SVA so could register on the same day I did the SVA

I sympathise with those of you delayed - I was really impatient with both of my builds, couldn't stand the thought of passing SVA and then waiting to get the car on the road. My local VRO (Swansea, adjacent to but but separate from main DVLA building) were great both times, I was SVA'd and registered same day. With the Westy they said it needed inspecting, I put on my best crestfallen look so they said bring it back after lunch. The inspection consisted of looking at chassis number and engine number. For the Ultima he said he didn't need to inspect it but came out to have a gander anyway.

I'd be on the phone every day if they were delaying me, if not at the office in person. I can see no excuse at all for making people wait a couple of weeks for a process that takes them a few minutes. Probably better to be polite and eager than bolshie though!

I seem to have had the same experience as Steve and Bob. SVA in the morning then wait in a big queue at my local DVLA office (Edinburgh) then 10 minutes later I had my tax disk and number plate assignment form in my grubby mits.

I would recommend spending some time organising all of the paperwork. Sorting out the reciepts into major subsystems and including a couple of build pictures and pictures of the finished article (including the chassis number) seemed to help quite a bit in convincing the DVLA that the car was real and that I built it.

For the people that turned up at the local centres with all the documents and got registration sorted there and then:

How did you get in touch with the relavent people to do this? I can only find the head office phone numbers and my 'local' office is still a good half hour drive away. SVA is booked for tuesday and I'd really like to get it all organised and road legal by the end of the week. I just keep getting told to send documents away...

My nearest offices are Northampton and Oxford, anyone any experiences of these?

Cheers,
Rich
