I need a letter from Ford statting the age of my engine. 2.0 Zetec.

I have sent off to Fords the serial no. as stamped on the bell housing flange above the starter. This was the no. SVA took as the engine serial number. Fords responded by saying the code was a digit short. There is definatly no other digits there.
Can anyone help? Is there another number/possition (I have searched all over the engine).
I did run the same engine in a westfield some years ago, so I know it to be pre cat. Maybe if I find the origonal invoice this will be acceptable as proof of age, but the SVA really want the Ford letter.

Advise welcome. Thanks

AFAIK, the first two alpha characters at the start of the engine number should relate the age of the block to a specific month. Can Ford give you a letter to this effect, or do SVA want a specific date?

That's correct. They are decoded in the October 2003 issue of Which Kit?

Kevp, if you let me know the first two letters, I can tell you the year and month of manufacture. It won't satisfy the SVA station, but might help!

Cheers Adam

The letters are- JK.

I have also been told that there are 3 more letters for engine size? This does not seem to ring true with my markings. I do have 2.0 cast on the block.

Also Ford may not give a serial number if it has not got a chassis to belong to. IE a customer orders a replacment engine for their car, Ford does not have a chassis to log it with, therefore no serial No. and no age ID ?

That would make it June 1988 which seems very early for a Zetec! Are you sure about those letters?

Thanks for replies.

I sent Ford a photo of the engine serial number which clearly had 2 letters followed by 4 numbers.

Ford have replied today with confirmation that the 2 letters ara all thats needed for dating and the last number must have been missed out completly on the production line.

So my Ford Zetec is June 88!

I know this might seem a silly question.... but is a two digit date casting on the block sufficiaent for SVA purposes or will I still need a letter from manufacturer?

Southampton SVA needed proof of age.
I was given a copy of a previous owners letter from Ford, and instructed to obtail a letter from Ford addressed to myself stating engine serial number & age.
This must be standard practice now for Southampton.
Ford are very helpfull.
