Afternoon all,

My wife has just returned back from the mother in laws with this painting

It doesn’t really go with any of the stuff in our house, but I think it’s actually quite a nice thing, so will find somewhere to put it.

A quick google isn’t really showing anything for the artist or similar paintings and I would be keen to know a bit more about it.

Thanks all
CTO

I'd ignore the Conway Toaban bit on the back, that looks like a stab in the dark by whoever sold it. The signature looks like it starts with a G rather than a C.
Grok isn't much help with it but I'm a bit jealous as we spent hours and hours working our way through a pile of paintings and prints a couple of years ago. Had a bit of a result with one that we sold to an Australian auction house. Pretty sure they turned us over as we had no idea about selling art but it was fun.
Your post has reminded me that we have a load more to get through smile And Grok might save us a load of time.

That looks like a Constable.

Unfortunately it's by Constable Groban.

Constable was a well regarded dauber, but Constable Groban was more of a 'throw a bit of paint there' kind of person......

Sorry to burst any bubbles but that painting looks very much like 'factory art' i.e. paintings that were mass produced in their thousands in the Far East from the 1970/80s onwards. They were churned out in a variety of styles, arrived en-masse in Europe and America to be framed, given a signature, labels etc. and sold through furnishing outlets rather than galleries.

I worked for a while for a chain of stores that bought in dozens at a time, swapping them between showrooms every month or two. They were never intended to be investments, just decoration.

Just dropped in to see pastures new...

This thread reminded me of a friend who told me triumphantly a couple of weeks ago that she'd just bought a Turner painting in a local antique shop. She was very pleased because it had only cost £8 and she bought it because 'it might be genuine, an undiscovered sketch'. After all it had 'By J.M.W. Turner' written on the back, it was called 'Salisbury Cathedral' and it wasn't a print because you could see brushstrokes on it.

Hmm.

Later she brought it round to show me. It was indeed rare; about 8x6" in a 1990s frame, it wasn't the same scene as the famous version. The brushstrokes were slapped on no doubt by a Chinaman. I suggested the best thing to do with it was burn it to keep warm and gestured to the stove hehe

Having had something potentially interesting that came my way evaluated by a major art dealer, I was introduced to the phrase ‘it has decorative value only and that’s subjective.’ Ouch

Can anyone identify a painting from a description?
I saw the painting in The Picine Gallery, Roubaix , France . It shows a blindfolded man stood on a low table with a bowl of water on the floor in front of him with a group of laughing men gathered round and a young girl looking upset . Any help appreciated

AI suggests that the painting is Le Supplice de l’eau (The water torture) by Edouard Debat-Ponsan
