Hi

Can you tell me anything reassuring about the IMS bearing? Has it had the upgrade? I assume this was part of service inspections?

Thank you

Hi Matt,

Thank you for your question! The IMS bearing is a topic of frequent discussion among Porsche enthusiasts, so I completely understand your interest.

The 2008 Cayman S features the M97 engine, which uses a larger, non-serviceable IMS bearing. This design greatly reduces the risk of failure compared to the earlier M96 engines. Reliable estimates suggest the failure rate for this generation is extremely low — less than 1%.

This car has not had an IMS bearing upgrade, as it’s generally unnecessary for this engine. However, it has been inspected during servicing and inspections by trusted specialists RPMtechnik and EPORSCH. They’ve found no signs of IMS-related issues or concerns during its maintenance history.

I hope this provides reassurance, but please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any further questions!

Kind regards,

Matt Scrase

Hi,

Sorry me again.

Drive belt/cam belt was last changed in 2020 at around 72k? Is this correct, or has it been done since. I think the recommedation is a change every 4 years?

Thanks again
Matt

Hi Matt,

The drive belt on the 2008 Porsche Cayman S 987 is recommended for replacement every 6 years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first, according to service schedules and forum discussions.

In this case, as you mention, the belt was replaced in 2020 at around 72,000 miles. A full service was conducted in September this year by independent specialists (EPORSCH), during which all major components, including the belt, were inspected for wear. No issues were identified, meaning the belt remains in good condition and doesn’t currently require replacement. The manufacturer’s recommendations align with this maintenance timeline.

This car has been exceptionally well cared for, with thousands invested in recent upgrades and maintenance to ensure it’s both mechanically sound and a joy to drive. Within the last 12–18 months, I’ve had a completely new suspension system installed, featuring Bilstein B4s, along with dampers, control arms, and anti-roll bars. The steering rack has been replaced, OEM bushes fitted all around, and the coolant pipes renewed. This extensive work not only enhances performance and handling but also makes the car feel remarkably like new.

Compared to other 987.1 examples on the market, this car stands out for its meticulous upkeep and the sheer driving pleasure it offers. I genuinely believe you’d struggle to find a better example.

Hope this helps, but if you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch!

Kind regards,

TrevorS

Again, thank you for the response. I have since found out there is of course timing chains on this engine, so all good with the drive/auxiliary belt.
