Was the engine rebuild required as as result of head gasket failure, timing chain wear or the well documented N14 engine's coolant system issues - i.e. water pump failure ? Would be good to know what prompted the rebuild.

The rebuild was a required due to loss of compression in cylinder 1. The piston had been damaged from carbon build up and detonation, cracking the land above the top ring. The cause is the previous owner putting a poor quality remap on the car.

The rebuild included (not limited to):
Reset of ecu and any maps removed. So it's now completely stock jcw map
Crank grinding, cylinders honed, all new bearings, seals gaskets, new forged pistons and rings, new cam chain kit, new coolant pump, and supply tube, head refurbishment, oil pump, oil supply lines, rebuilt turbo, new clutch and flywheel and various new or latest parts like the latest throttle part number etc. In short, no expense was spared in setting the drivetrain back to as close to new and original as possible.

Hi, has it suffered from the usual sunroof problems?

No sunroof issues. Both open and close, and seal. I've used them frequently in the summer and also treated the rubber seals with silicone spray to keep them supple. Also ensured drainage channels are clear.

Solid replies so far, frustrating on the start up video that there's a lot of water vapour from the cold start. Is there any smoke when hot?

Oil consumption that could indicate honing hasn't been successful?

I know! It is just water vapour of course. The photos were taken only 2 minutes from my house, so no chance for a full warmup.

No smoke when warm. Oil consumption is good. The N14 motor does use oil but following the run in procedure after the rebuild I've kept a close eye on it obviously and have not needed to top up once after the final oil change of the run ins. That has included a mix of commuting and a couple 3-4 hour motorway journeys.

For additional info - The run in procedure was 500 miles below 3k rpm followed by an oil change. Then a further 500 miles below 4k rpm followed by a further oil change. The oil after the second change was inspected and there was no glitter visible (sorry, no pictures).
