As usual one of the most succesful rally cars in terms of driver and manufacturer titles gets totally overlooked....
The Xsara WRC was still competive after nearly 10 years in the sport and after all of Sebastien Loeb,s success in it Petter Solberg was more competitve in a 2006 Xsara in 2009 than in most of his Subaru years.
Are you remotely pissing serious? Are you genuinely trying to tell us that Peter fking Solberg in a Citreon Xsara is somehow on the same planetary alignment as either Marku Alen or Henri T in an S4 or Sandro Munari in a Stratos. The Xsara WRC was still competive after nearly 10 years in the sport and after all of Sebastien Loeb,s success in it Petter Solberg was more competitve in a 2006 Xsara in 2009 than in most of his Subaru years.
Finally the Intergrale made an appearance but it took until page 2.
It's taken until page 3 for this

Best rally car of all time? Indeed pick one of RS1800, Quattro, 205T16, Integrale or Impreza- all would have a case for varying reasons. I'm gutted to only ever to have got to see the latter two at full chat ).
Of the cars I have got to see, the most dramatic for me will always be the 6R4- absolutely bonkers. To think someone would design such a thing on a premise of it being a Metro . And to see one being driven well- with all of it's transmission whine and non-turbo restricted V6 bellow . Happy days.

With my head I vote for the Mk2 Escort - simply because they are still competitive against much more modern machinery.
With my heart, I vote for the 6R4 - I can remember the sense of anticipation eachevening as a 6 year old waiting for Rally Report to come onto the BBC to find out that the 6R4s were not winning the Lombard RAC. I have to say it didn't matter too much - but I still love them.
I had a Scalextric one too....
Both the Escort and the 6R4 make a fabulous noise - you can't claim that for the Xsara
Hello Andy D, great to see you posting here. Being Irish I would say the RS 1800 but I do recall seeing you comming towards me on the main road from Clonakilty to Cork in 1978 , you were warmng up your tyres on the public road prior to the Ring Stage of the West Cork Rslly . And I WAS IMPRESSED ! Car was a Datsun .

I personally think the "5" car in this picture is superior to the Squitron. The Xsara WRC was still competive after nearly 10 years in the sport and after all of Sebastien Loeb,s success in it Petter Solberg was more competitve in a 2006 Xsara in 2009 than in most of his Subaru years.
And now for something completely different:
Ring ding ding Saab 96. It (with Erik Carlsson at the wheel) set a new standard for rallying
Followed by:
Doot doot doot.... Mini!! 4-wheel-brakes! Don't fly the flag - drive it! (as Spike Milligan said).
One of my favourites -
Austin McHale in his incredibly quick Opel Monza.
But - yes, there can be only one.

It depends on your definition of BEST. I drove a few. The Stratos was difficult but so satisfying, a wonderful engine over your shoulder but not a lot of grunt unless it was a works 4 valve. I spent a day with a works car at Donington, modern GT times with a passenger in the fog with ice on Coppice - mega. The Quattro was brute force and not a lot else, it didn't handle and I had to learn to left foot brake properly to keep the truck turbo spinning. Mark 1 and 2 Escorts were fun, the wonderful Duckworth engine but a back axle that was so heavy that the car didn't really handle, we had the Dustbins going almost as fast despite being 80bhp down, they handled better.
My choice - Roger Duckworth's Sierra 4x4 with a Cosworth tuned Granada 24V V6, mega handling, superb traction, 350bhp and a noise to die for - he won the National Championship in it and everybody was smiling.
Can any of you find a photo of the beast....
Can't find anything other than Roger's Subaru - however at the risk of being sycophantic I think there's a few here who don't recognise your name (DJRC however appears to have a depth of knowledge that we may know him by a different tag....)My choice - Roger Duckworth's Sierra 4x4 with a Cosworth tuned Granada 24V V6, mega handling, superb traction, 350bhp and a noise to die for - he won the National Championship in it and everybody was smiling.

So for those who do remember here's one of Andy (I think?)
