Hi all.

Her with a newish Tesla model 3, quite fancied a Taycan after seeing a white one a few days ago in Manchester.

It would have to be sub £50k.
So an early one.

I see there are 2 battery sizes,
75 kwh and 93 kwh.

What are the good anc bad things about the Taycan in a nutshell?

Brakes are amazing.

Depreciation is just beyond ridiculous. If you buy it and don’t like it you’re in for a world of pain. Tread carefully!

Would love to get rid of my Tesla for a Taycan. Main things putting me off would be servicing costs and out of warranty repairs. Plus they are a fair bit bigger but possibly less room.

if she does decent journeys she'll miss the range of a new 3 versus an early taycan which has probably lunched 15-20% of its battery by now.

As others have said, it's a barge on the outside but tiny on the inside too. Not sure there's a great business case if its only the looks that appeal.

Why on earth will it have lost 15 to 20% of battery capacity?

Not heard of any that have lost 15%-20% of battery...low single digits maybe, but that's it.

Warranty can be put on all cars up to 100k mile/15yrs. Costs ~£1k per year. Buy from a dealer and you get 2yrs thrown in.

Battery is still only 8yrs/100k miles. I suspect they'll do something more on these in time, but a sub-50k car will be half way to that point.

Bigger battery is key. But fast charging (genuine) means for long runs it's largely a non-issue unless you're one of the seemingly many "900 miles a day and no need to piss" warriors.

Plenty of first gen issues with them, but warranty and/or recalls should see them licked. Heater - recall and new design replacement. Brake pipes - ditto. Battery pack - a few have issues. etc.

There are ~45 approved used 4S/Turbos available for sub-60k, and I suspect dealers will take healthy bids.

Check insurance quotes first too.

Head over to the Taycan forum for plenty of advice. Best driver's EV still IMO. A very, very good car.

We still enjoy our 2021 4S. Minimal issues and cheap motoring with a warranty (certainly compared to our other 22 mpg efforts!).

I found the Taycan felt much heavier (which it is) than the Tesla - a bigger car and a lower range. But... Porsche.

Personally I wouldn't swap.

I bought a 2020 Taycan 4S about 3 months ago. I part exchanged my 2016 Model S P90D.

The negatives vs the Tesla:

Much less boot space and back seat space
No tow bar
Have to pay for fast charging
Slower to 60mph

The positives vs the Tesla:

Much faster charging
Much better range, virtually no battery degradation vs 30% in the Tesla
Much faster after 60mph, especially at higher speeds
My god it drives better, just a nicer place to be, much much better handling and high speed stability
Feels like a car built by a car company, not a software company

I thought I loved my Tesla, but would I go back, hell no. Do I miss some of the practicality, yes.

As you’ve leased it, it’s really the best car you’ve ‘n’ever owned.

What are you comparing it to and why is it better?

We are also considering a Taycan.
The 70 registration ones look great value.

They do but be aware you've only 4 years of battery warranty left at that point - after which point the value will dip heavily.

Porsche warranty is £1250 year and unless car has a pre existing porsche warranty it will need a very demanding 111 point inspection, plus a full porsche service history to be eligible.

I have a Taycan Turbo S and Cayenne GTS. The Taycan has enough room for my tall 12 year old to sit behind me (I’m 6 foot 3). My Cayenne has enough room for me to sit behind me.

My battery has 280 miles range still so no degradation.

Depreciation looks fierce. But, in the UK the list price is just a number. Everyone leased through their companies and when they are first sold the market makes an adjustment.

I have since taken off the California emissions stickers. Whomever, thought void stickers were required on a Taycan to show it’s an EV should have void stickers stuck on their genitals.

I love mine it’s easily the best car I’ve had. It’s a 4S with the upgraded battery and how more power than I’d ever need. Is extremely comfortable and very practical for a family of 4. Its looks sensational gets loads of positive attention and is peanuts to run. For me there is no comparison between a Taycan and a Tesla go for it you won’t regret it.

I used to be a Tesla fanboy and still respect the company and most of the engineers. I'm done with them now though, not giving any more money to Elon.

Just wish Porsche and other manufacturers would replicate some of the functionality like decent froots, pin to drive, sentry mode and lower priced public charging would be the cherry on top.

I never consider how the CEO of a company is perceived when buying anything - I generally think about the quality of the product.

Most CEOs aren't being dicks in public though. It also affects how the product you're buying is perceived, more likely to get keyed etc.

About the same as Mercedes, VW and BMW over 12 months.
