This appeals to my inner-nerd. I actually managed to watch the whole thing through.

It's a video of an M139 AMG engine being assembled. The precision engineering - the care and attention to detail.

Quite something (imho).

Enjoy (if that's your kind of thing).

Oops. For some reason that starts half way through - this one starts at the start!

Watched that years ago when Emira was launched. It's captivating and it made me quite fancy the 2.0ltr option. Quite the piece of engineering,

We all love a V6 but that AMG engine is many generations ahead of the 25 year old Toyota Camry lump.

Surely Lotus must be paying more for the AMG engine and dual clutch gearbox compared to the old Toyota engine and the manual gearbox? Yet the V6 is the higher priced vehicle.

That's a good point, but the underlying tech of the engine doesn't matter that much to value and product positioning to drive price.

A manual V6 is more highly valued by a specific sports cur buying demographic that the Emira appeals to, so it's positioned at a more premium price point. Whether that is the best product stratification is open to debate!

Amazing huh? What engineering. It's easy to forget how lucky we are to live in such times - with such amazing engineering available to us. Whether that's the i4 or the V6 or whatever's in the Cayman etc - what times to be alive and enjoy stuff like this.

Yep, I know the 2.0 is a much more modern engine but it doesn't sound like the V6 and isn't 3.5 litre. No-one really looks at how old an engine design is. The Toyota engine is bigger and has more cylinders, therefore it wins. wink

A bit dull I know, but having owned a high revving 4.0 V8 previously, I can really appreciate the fuel economy on long drives. 8th gear makes well under 2,000rpm on the motorway. Given the Emira is in the GT space I would see this as a nice bonus.

A V6 or V8 is always going to sound more exotic but the AMG unit does sound purposeful. Imagine if they had used a boxer engine - it would sound great with a deep burble.

Maybe but stick my i4 anywhere above 4500 rpm and it makes the most wonderful howl.....

I've never really understood the idea that somehow 4 cylinder engines are inferior to V6s or V8s really. The BDR in my Caterham is just a joyous thing!

Glad the i4 sounds good - encouraging for some day in the future!

Yeah, it's just different sounding and performs differently. There are good engines of all types. For me the car looks like a mini supercar and that made me feel like a V6 suited it better.

Yes agreed. I sometimes wonder if people could do a blind test and work out what engine it was just by how it drove. Now I don't mean actually blind of course, but with ear plugs in to get rid of all sound and also tape over the rev counter!

I've driven both. I think I could definitely tell. Even before they changed gear. Of course once they changed gear you'd know right away.
