Brake Pedal Feel
Discussion
How firm is your brake pedal? Without the engine on, my pedal is rock hard. If I start driving, the pedal feels quite soft before firming up. If I then come to a halt, I can pump the brake pedal 2 or 3 times and it becomes firm again, but start driving and it goes back to the initial soft pedal. The brakes have been bled quite frequently and no air comes out but it's a long time since I drove another A110 so I don't know if they are all like this or there is something else going on. Despite all this, the do work really well
Are you referring to the brake servo? When the engine is running there is a servo system to assist the brakes. It operates by a vacuum. Once the engine stops the vacuum dissipates after a couple of presses of the pedal, or over a longer period if you don’t press it…
It’s a common system across nearly all road cars. Power steering for brakes…
Or is it something else and I’m way off base!

It could be servo-related, Ian, I'm not sure. When bleeding the brakes the pedal is rock solid. When driving, there is a bit of travel before the pedal firms up. But, if I stop (engine still running), put the car in Park and pump the pedal 2 or 3 times, the pedal becomes totally firm again. Until I drive off and use the brakes!

Any better when the brakes are hot? Mine feels a little soft initially until there's a bit more heat in the pads (DS2500).
No, it doesn't make a difference unfortunately. The only thing I can think of is that when I fitted the Life110 rear pads I was advised to fit some adhesive pads to the back of them. I wonder if this is in part causing the issue. I'm going to put my Tarox discs and XP8 pads back on and see what it's like, then do another bleed and go from there
