Induction/Exhaust Noise Difference?
Discussion
I've currently driven 4 different Alpines, all of them with Active Sports Exhaust so they all have the Sound Pipe but one of them sounded quite different.
The two '18 PEs and the '71 Pure sounded pretty much the same, the '72 Legende though had more exhaust burble from the Sound Pipe which you could clearly hear coming from behind the passenger seat, it also seemed like it had less induction noise and a less pops on the overun, infact I didn't notice them once.
Does anyone know the reason for this difference? Has the sound pipe changed? Is it the GPF changing the sound? Also, I wonder how does the 2023 model sound in comparison as I've yet to drive one?

The '18 PEs - 12k and 25k, the '71 Pure - 6k and the '72 Legende only 500 miles, so you may very well be correct.
The exhaust burble from the low mileage '71 sounded both muted but more noticeable as there was less of the other noises.
Dare I ask why you needed a courtesy car?

I don't know how much the GPF changes the sound, but rest assured the 2023 GT and S I've driven all had plenty of pops and bangs in sport mode, and sounded very good with that nice crisp induction gargle when you hit the throttle at low revs.Related to this topic, can anyone clarify the best means of visually identifying if a car has the sports exhaust or not?
A few months ago a purchased an MY21 Pure sold as having the sports exhaust but the salesman did not know how to prove this to me. The technician said he would have to remove the under trays and see if there is wiring to a valve control unit which was not a 5 minute job so we did an adjusted deal based on it not having a sports exhaust.
Since purchase, I have put my VIN in My Alpine app and this shows the sports exhaust as an option. My exhaust pipe tip is twin pipes (oval shape with a centre bar). All the cars on the forecourt had this except an MY23 base model that had a single circular pipe. Can you use this as a visual check if it has sports exhaust or not?
In neutral and in Sport mode, with a blip of the throttle mine pops and bangs significantly. However, when on the go (Sport, both auto and manual) there are minimal pops/bangs. High revs down to 2nd gets some and flat out upshifts too. All other times is sport manual, including lifting off there is rarely anything.
I have recently tried the dealers demo MY23 A110 S and this has significantly more pops and bangs when on the go in Sport mode. Every lift of the throttle made a burble. As described above, mine does not do this. Is this simply related to the ecu tune? I.e 300hp cars have significantly more pops and bangs than base 250hp tune?
I have read a few posts on here that the car still has pops/bangs with the non sports exhaust so I'm still not 100% clear if I have it or not and if My Alpine app is a reliable check.
Thanks

Yes, the split/twin pipes means you have the active sports exhaust. HawkR said:

This may be right, the Alpine specialist at St Albans told me the GT had more pops and bangs than the previous cars. I thought the 300PS cars sounded a little more throaty and aggressive as well.Edited by Rob_RCF on Tuesday 14th November 21:38
[quote=Jez O]I have a 72 plate base model with sport exhaust, and there are plenty of bangs in sport mode, on downshifts, lifting off and between gear changes. So it definitely happens on (current) 250 bhp models too.
Ok, thanks. I get them on downshift to 2nd and on the upshift under load but playing with the throttle even at a high rpm in 2nd/3rd does not do anything. Neither does downshifting to any gear other than 2nd. If yours is the update model (standard A110) maybe the 250 tune (Pure) has a slightly different map.
Slight thing in the back of my head is I note Life110 offer an exhaust sound de-tune and as I'm the second owner a small chance it has had this but no easy way to tell.
Thanks

Ok, thanks. Did a dealer tell you this or has it been covered on this forum previously?
It must be the case that 300hp tune cars have a more aggressive pop/bang map.
A dealer told me when I was testing a few earlier this year, I also so work for a dealer now and confirmed that the only standard exhaust we have is not split in the centre. It must be the case that 300hp tune cars have a more aggressive pop/bang map.
I'm not sure why they sound different but pre/post GPF cars and mileage are probably the biggest differences.
