Restricting the cab induction resonator.
Discussion
Another mod that will no doubt send shivers down some owners spines
10mm socket to undo the plastic housing of the resonator from the rear bulkhead, inside the engine compartment. 9mm socket to release the attached intake rubber pipe. I simply cut a piece of high density foam and pushed it inside the plastic housing butting up against its internal wall, it is totally secure and cannot go any further. after re attaching the resonator to the bulkhead and then its intake pipe that's it!
Very simple procedure but what a difference it makes; suits me but wont for everyone.
I've posted all the relevant photos on flikr.

[quote=LGC-Adams]Oh joy!! I shall give this a go.
Like you, I hate these contrived, sporty sounds.
Thanks for posting pictures too.[/quote
If you are going to be a purist then most of the "sporty" sounds are contrived. Certainly you would include pops and bangs from the exhaust (wouldn't happen if you shut off the fuel on the overrun), flaps in the exhaust and so on.

So, what difference does it make. What was it you were trying to solve?
I just prefer a quieter cab and it works; little, to no engine noise now when cruising on the motorway, which i often have to do.I can only speak for my PE rather than later cars with a particulate filter - but I don't think either the resonator or the sports exhaust (in Sport) make any significant difference when cruising at vaguely legal motorway speeds. It's just (but only just) possible to hear a slight increase in noise in Sport - but I'm surprized anyone would make an issue of it. Different matter around town when lifting off or accelerating hard, and I can certainly see some taking objection (or taking a completely opposite view for that matter).
Hi Neil et al.,
I did the same, independently, but found that the sound gets muffled, you lose too much of the higher frequencies.
Instead i then fitted a round disk of 10 mm multiplex with a 10 mm hole in the middle.
Its just a friction fit and on the cabin side so no risk even if it would come loose.
This reduces the intake sound just enough without affecting the spectrum.
A smaller or larger hole will allow you to adjust the dampening to your liking.
Cheers, Byrge

Ok. I've seen several comments about toning down the sports exhaust a bit. I swithered a lot when spec'ing mine and ultimately went with the standard exhaust. Glad I did, as you say for longer trips it makes it more refined. I did wonder if the resonator on all the time would get a little bit irritating when you weren't in the mood for it.
I was the same, I was really unsure if I should get the sports exhaust. Any review I watched or read (and this was many) pretty much made out it was a must have, and I could only get a test drive in cars with it, so I couldn't compare. I decided not to get it though, as this is my daily car, and from the test drives I found it a bit too much for all of the time (if it was my weekend toy and not used all the time, then that would be very different).I recently had a loan car for a day which had the sports exhaust, so it was interesting to compare to mine. I'm not regretting my decision, the sports exhaust is fun in small doses, but completely get how it would start to irritate over time.

I suspect it depends on whether you use sports mode a lot - the pops bangs and flatulence are rather antisocial and get on my nerves. I use normal mode almost exclusively - either with a lot of manual overides or fully manual. In that mode the induction resolator adds character to an engine under accleration which is otherwise effective but (to my ears) a bit bland. At speed the resonator and the exhaust noise is lost amongst the (fairly modest) levels of road, wind and other engine/gearbox sounds.I recently had a loan car for a day which had the sports exhaust, so it was interesting to compare to mine. That said opinions amongst owners are very divided.

I think you're right, in normal mode you do get to hear more with the resonator, but it's shame to feel like you don't want to use sports mode. There are pop and bangs with the non-sports exhaust, but not loud enough to make you feel you're making everyone around you notice. That said opinions amongst owners are very divided.

I don't miss the sports mode at all. If I did I'd get the life 110 remap which removes or reduces the noises I don't like.Gassing Station | Alpine | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
