MPG in different modes
Discussion
Not that I bought my PE for it's economy, that just an added bonus, but with the price of fuel and all the talk of hypermiling, made me wonder if anybody has done a comparison of MPG in different modes.
I know that in auto and normal the car tries to change up early and give best economy, whereas auto and sport focuses on performance so will hang onto gears longer.
A few years ago I commutted in a Brabus Smart Roadster, which had a 6 speed ECU controlled manual/auto box. I tried between full auto and manual using paddles and sometimes could get better economy in manual as I could better predict the traffic.
The Alpine is much smarter as far as being in the right gear but just wondered if anybody has tried

At the risk of being 'that guy', I'm not sure any of us can conclusively confirm this - there are so many variables in fuel economy figures that it's unlikely a meaningful set of figures could be arrived at without considerable commitment to a very controlled experiment. It's the very reason that official figures come from industry standardised drive cycles performed on rolling roads (because although it isn't 'real world', it is actually comparable across vehicles).
Very impressed at your figures Biggles - for S&G, here's a summary of my first year:
Tanks: 46
Average mpg: 33.9
Min mpg: 26.0
Max mpg: 44.7
St Dev: 4.4
That is all in a combination of normal/sport/manual (I switch to sport when roads get good, often using the paddles, then put it back in normal whenever I pass through a built up area or just plodding on motorway - quite a binary style actually). But as you can see, wildly variable...
ETA: Above figures are tank to tank calcs - dash mpg gauge over-reads by an average of 2.5%, just FYI.

I achieved 9.1 mpg at Hockenheim last week which, based on the pump price at the track, worked out at £3.89 per lap!
Were you at the circuit on the 11th Dave? A friend of mine was there with his quick Caterham (black with orange noseband) Edited by Car Mad Dave on Monday 18th April 14:22

On the day he was there he said there were three blue Alpines going round.
He said one slow, one medium pace & one being driven very fast. I wondered at 9.1mpg if that was you?

Yes, I was there on 11th. There were 5 blue Alpines in total, not sure which one I was as first time in car and track but was comfortable and in a groove by the afternoon. Probably, slow, medium and fast depending on what time of the day it was!On the day he was there he said there were three blue Alpines going round.
